Talk:List of dramatic television series with LGBT characters: 1960s–2000s/Archive 1

Impastor

Has gay characters. Not sure if comedy or dramatic though.

Hung

Has a transgender character in a guest role

Desperate Housewives

I know it's splitting hairs, but shouldn't this be in the "soap opera" section rather than the drama series section? It really is a soap, albeit a satirical one.

Bad Girls (UK Television Series)

Bad Girls featured several lesbian and bisexual characters, as well as one transwoman and a gay male character. The series should absolutely be included. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.141.79.23 (talk) 03:26, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

I've added Bad Girls. I don't much about the show except knowing it's LGBT related, so I left some items blank. --Raura (talk) 08:30, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

The Closer (US TV series)

Dr. Morales (Jonathan Del Arco), the medical examiner from "The Closer" is openly gay and would fit this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marniethereader (talkcontribs) 21:27, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Picket Fences

April 29, 1993: On CBS' Picket Fences, two teenage girls kiss. The network demands that the scene be reshot in the dark. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.148.31.196 (talk) 09:31, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Army Wives

In the above show, 2 lesbian characters were introduced in the sixth seaon: a woman soldier and a civilian named Charlie. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.134.49.47 (talk) 14:24, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. Can they be described as prominent (leads or main supporting cast who recur regularly)? If so we should add in. Contaldo80 (talk) 12:03, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
What's interesting to note is that these 2 characters are the first 2 gays to appear prominently in the show. There's been a story on the "Dont ask, Don't tell" policy in the second season (2008) involving a lesbian student but that lasted one episode only, if I'm not mistaken. Here Captain Nicole Galassini, portrayed by Kellie Martin has appeared as of now in six episodes while her girlfriend/fiancée Charlie portrayed by Ryan Michelle Bathe appeared in nine of them. Northern Exposure

1992: Northern Exposure devotes a May sweeps episode to showing how Cicely, Alaska, was founded by 19th-century lesbian pioneers Roslyn (Jo Anderson) and Cicely (Yvonne Suhor). Exposure's bed-and-breakfast entrepreneurs Ron (Doug Ballard) and Erick (Don R. McManus) married during the 1994 May sweeps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.148.31.196 (talk) 10:01, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Is a Wikipedia article (broadcast or web TV series) missing an LGBT category?

Just a note: if you know that a series features ongoing LGBT characters, it's a good idea to check that their W article also includes the relevant category/ies for it: , , . Pyxis Solitary (talk) 11:27, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Supernatural

There are no REAL LGBT characters on this television show. There are no couples at all actually. There are ships of certain characters that are LGBT couples but they are pure fan fiction and not on the actual show. This information has been deleted for the inaccuracy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chacha00 (talkcontribs) 05:15, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

The same situation is happening over on List of LGBT characters in television and List of LGBT characters in film, radio, and TV fiction. Part of it is encouraged by this tumblr post, though looking at this specific page's history there must be more elsewhere. AD (talk) 07:56, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

-Actually, there are a lot of LGBT characters in Supernatural! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:AA14:C200:5900:B8EB:EE2E:E687:5659 (talk) 13:28, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

Other related list: List of LGBT characters in television and radio

Just a reminder: it's also important to add names of LGBT characters to the all-inclusive List of LGBT characters in television and radio. Pyxis Solitary (talk) 03:36, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Who is Lesbian or Gay or Bisexual or Transgender?

What's the use of adding a TV series and the names of L / G / B / T character(s) in it, if their orientation is not specified for those who don't or can't watch it? I'm absolutely sure I'm not the only one who wonders what the orientation of so many characters are. If it's not stated ... it's all guesswork. Pyxis Solitary talk 19:39, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

Page size

This article has 431,613 bytes of markup - it is far too big. What is the best way to split it? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:46, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

The List of gay, lesbian or bisexual people eventually became too long and was divided into alphabetical units.
Since the next decade begins 108 days from today this one can be divided into two lists: 1970s–2000s and 2010s–2020s:  List of dramatic television series with LGBT characters: 1970s–2000s  and  List of dramatic television series with LGBT characters: 2010s–2020s; along with a parent article:  List of dramatic television series with LGBT characters. Pyxis Solitary (yak) 23:54, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
20th century, 2000s, 2010s and soon 2020s. An article for the 20th century may be small, but it would still be big enough to be a reasonable article, and I anticipate it can grow significantly. Onetwothreeip (talk) 03:28, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Doing it chronologically would be the easiest for sure. I just want to raise the idea of separating it out into other categories, e.g., List of dramatic television series with transgender characters, List of dramatic television series with gay or bisexual male characters, List of dramatic television series with gay or bisexual female characters. It may be that this is a less than ideal way of splitting the article up for reasons other than ease, but I just wanted to bring up another possibility besides a chronological split. Since many editors do not necessarily have this list on their Watchlist, I checked the User statistics since 2017 and have let several editors who have contributed 10 or more edits know about this Page size topic (I did not include editors who received warnings about disruptive or vandalism edits). Article split on 20 September 2019

Six days after the Page size topic was created, the article was split. I do not agree with how it was done. I also find it to be an edit that dismissed any discussion about how to split it, and denied input from those editors who may not be checking Wikipedia with daily frequency and might have wanted to comment about it. I, myself, could have gone ahead and split the article, but when more than one editor has become involved in discussing how best to do so, common courtesy towards other editors and reaching consensus prevails. Pyxis Solitary (yak) 01:28, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Unfortunately there were not more participants in the discussions. What would be a better way to split the article? Onetwothreeip (talk) 08:30, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Six days is not enough and you know it. If this had been an RfC, it would stay open for at least 30 days until all editors with an interest in the topic had an opportunity to respond. Not every editor who contributes to Wikipedia is married to it. Pyxis Solitary (yak) 08:42, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
There's just no need to wait. It's not as though this is a particularly important or controversial article compared to others, and even then it's not always necessary to discuss changes first. RfC is really just for if the issues are too intractable for normal talk page discussions to decide, and talk page discussions are themselves only necessary if there's any dispute regarding edits. Onetwothreeip (talk) 08:45, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
You really just don't get what common courtesy towards other editors means, do you? But maybe you've let barnstars and cookies go to your head. That would be understandable because you certainly wouldn't be the one and only Wikipedia editor that's bought into the petting. Pyxis Solitary (yak) 09:09, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Only one editor has ever given me a barnstar and I haven't received cookies. I think both are pointless. Onetwothreeip (talk) 10:51, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Yikes, this page needs a lot of work

I don't feel like going through this a lot, but this needs a LOT of sources. Its currently a mess. I would model it after the List of animated series with LGBT characters pages, with the necessity of this page to be broken up, possibly.--Historyday01 (talk) 18:24, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

It needs citations for many entries, yes. Since you pointed out the missing sources, you can contribute constructively by finding and adding citations. But otherwise there is nothing about this list that "needs a lot of work".
Btw, I saw that you have two user accounts: User:Historyday01 and User:Historyhermann1993. However, you have not identified them as being alternative accounts of the same individual. Per WP:MULTIPLE: "It is recommended that multiple accounts be identified as such on their user pages; templates such as User alternative account or one of a selection of user boxes may be used for this purpose...multiple accounts may not be used to comment on proposals or requests...."
Your post (30 March 2020) is very similar in nature to the post created (on 30 March 2020) in the comedy list talk page by another User with "hist" in their account name.
Therefore, in accordance with the Username policy: do you have more than the two above-referenced Wikipedia accounts? And if you do, please provide them. I'm sure you will understand why being vigilant about sock puppetry is important for members of Wikipedia's community. Thank you. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 08:32, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Nope that other account you mention on the List of comedy television series with LGBT characters is not my account. They must have had the same idea as me. I haven't edited that wikipedia page at this point. As for User:Historyhermann1993, I don't use that account anymore, like ever, as I created it for a dumb school project.Historyday01 (talk) 13:25, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

castiel was never stated pansexual by anyone why is this here.... (misha collins called castiel gay as an umbrella term specifically because of fans having their own interpretation)

castiel was never stated pansexual, i actually have no clue as to where that information came from. especially if it’s unclear if chuck or crowley are bi or pan. we hear misha collins call it a “homosexual declaration of love” in an interview and says cas is GAY, as an UMBRELLA TERM, because cas isn’t to be labeled, mostly because of fans seeing him as up to interpretation, some people see him as gay, some as asexual, and apparently some see him as pansexual even tho i’ve never seen that head canon until now, so there’s another reason he is not to be labeled as anything that specific, especially as pansexual, because of the fact that he isn’t stated, and fans can see him as whatever they want. if anything label him as gay, as the actors and fans have claimed he is, no one said he’s pansexual. there’s also no legitimate proof he ever shows attraction to women anywhere in the series, the only woman castiel was ever with(at least as him self) was, april the reaper, when he was human, solely out of desperation, and meg is another story, they’re just friends, cas having kissed meg out of an in the moment thing, still doesn’t prove anything, and it was still seemingly forced into the narrative. in fact i could use all the moments he’s around women and uncomfortable to prove he’s never actually shown attraction to anyone but dean. remember hannah trying to hit on cas and failed, not legitimate evidence but you do realize she took a male vessel afterwards.... dean is entire other story, no one confined him bisexual, and misha even came out and said that the spanish dub was a “rouge translation”, jensen ackles himself says dean isn’t to be labeled but that doesn’t mean necessarily he is to be included in the official list, nothing is official as of yet, this is supposed to be an accurate list so i politely state, stop editing false information, including pansexual cas, which is just not accurate. sure i would love to see cas be confirmed pansexual, i consider myself bisexual or pansexual as well, but it’s just not accurate. simply list that castiel is called gay as an umbrella term because that’s the information that we have been provided.

thank you, and please open up editing again, or change this information. Negativeseventy7 (talk) 05:15, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Castiel ??

@Kte95, you know Castiel is not canonically pansexual, right??? His sexuality was never stated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2800:484:917A:8300:7DD1:96EC:C797:E6B5 (talk) 19:49, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Request for Page Protection re Supernatural

I filed a request for page protection due to the constant revert/edit war going on about Castiel and Dean from Supernatural. It's clear neither party is acting in good faith anymore, as they're just slap-reverting each other over and over. Ipstenu (talkcontribs) 00:54, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

it was perviously locked for the same reason, only to be reopened by whoever, via request from myself so i could correct castiel from whoever keeps editing him to pansexual, which is wrong, because castiel was never labeled anything in the show, only by misha, as gay or queer as an umbrella term so fans can still have their own interpretation. Negativeseventy7 (talk) 06:02, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

I've protected the article again for 2 weeks. Please use that time to discuss the topic here and come to a consensus. Provide sources that support your argument. If the edit war continues again after this protection expires, the page will simply be protected again, and some editors will likely be blocked. ‑Scottywong| [prattle] || 04:28, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, Scotty. We have two issues:

1. Is Castiel Queer or Pansexual -- Kte95 says Castiel is pansexual, Negativeseventy7 says he's queer/gay. 2. Is Dean biseuxal -- User:Fangirlinatrenchcoat and an anon editor both keep adding him

If ANY of you have any evidence to this, and by this we mean links to the articles where people state "He's gay" or whatever, please share them. But right now the information suggests that Castile is queer/gay (and possible agender being an angel), and Dean is categorically not bisexual no matter how much everyone ships him. The only proof for Dean has been the Spanish language dubs. That said, EW has reported the dub was incorrect.

I believe that labeling Cas as queer would be the best middle-ground here, as gay still suggests homosexual, and pansexual (while normal amongst real humans) is not all that common on television. And that's the thing. We're talking about TV characters on the CW. They would legit use the word if they meant it. They didn't. But Cas did say he loved Dean. Now, what we really need here is someone to find an article where the show talks about Cas' sexuality. Does ANYONE have that?

To be clear, I don't even watch the show, I know nothing, but folks need to calm down and talk or we're going to end up with some of you banned, and I don't like that solution. -- Ipstenu (talkcontribs) 05:18, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Ipstenu I didn't make the edit that said Castiel was pansexual, I simply reverted most of the edits that came after, cause they:

 1. Didn't provide any sources to back them up
 2. Added sources that weren't credible or had already been debunked

I did add that Castiel was Agender because it's been stated multiple times in the show that an angel's true form is genderless. I also stopped explaining why I was undoing their edits because they wouldn't listen and just ignored me/others -- Kte95 (talk) 05:42, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Sorry about that, it was messy trying to unravel who did what and when with all the reverts. But. If the show has stated Cas is genderless, than we should say he has no gender and cite it. Do you have any articles that support that? That's what we need now to settle things. Ipstenu (talkcontribs) 20:20, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

I wasn't sure if this site is considered official, but i could only find this Screenrant article (https://screenrant.com/supernatural-angels-trivia-facts/), nothing else but fandom wiki pages. The show itself and those wiki pages go a bit more into detail though. Explaining that, despite having a female or male name, angel's true forms have no gender and are sometimes even described as "junkless". And they've always refused to identify with a gender when questioned about it -- Kte95 (talk) 23:58, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

It's been a week and we have no credible sources and half the party doesn't wish to engage. Due to the lack of information, I think a proper middle road here is to flag Cas as queer (not gay, which implies solely homosexuality) as that best exemplifies the somewhat unknown definition of him. As for the gender, again, no sources we can use, so we leave it off until any are found. Dean, however stays off the list -- there's nothing that backs that up except one translation, which was already debunked. So as much as that sucks, that's where I think we are. Ipstenu (talkcontribs) 01:25, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

You cannot say a character is "queer" unless you also provide a reliable, published source that identifies the character as "queer". Queer is a vague POV description that says nothing about the character, and the point of this list is to identify the LGB sexual orientation of characters and, in the case of Ts, the gender identity of characters. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 10:54, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
I get that, but what we have as 'fact' is he expresses love to male and female characters. Would it be better to say 'presumably bisexual'? I have no horse in the race other than I wanted people to stop having a stupid edit war. Ipstenu (talkcontribs) 20:39, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
To presume is to speculate, and speculation dwells in the realm of POV. I think the new revised description passes the smell test better. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 15:50, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Supernatural and Castiels sexuality

@ Pyxis Solitary (yak) I’m not sure what happened to the previous discussions on this, but it was decided that the characters sexuality would remain undetermined since the show itself never labeled his sexuality and the character has also had female love interests. Plus, the actor has retracted his statement, where he called the confession “homosexual” Kte95 (talk) 19:17, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

@Kte95: The discussions were archived (at top of page you'll see "Archive: 1": click on the 1 and you'll open the page; the discussions about Castiel begin with topic # 17).
Per "Supernatural star Misha Collins blames 'rogue translator' for changed viral scene: 'I'm irked'", Entertainment Weekly (published November 25, 2020): "the producers have maintained that Dean is straight". But it doesn't suggest that Castiel saying "I love you" to Dean meant brotherly love instead of gay love.
Per "Supernatural Star Confirms Castiel Is Gay", ScreenRant (November 10, 2020): "Collins confirms Castiel's feelings were romantic."
And the reportage by PopBuzz of Misha Collins at the DarkLight Online Convention quotes him: "Castiel tells Dean he loves him and basically makes Destiel canon...Fans are freaking out after that. To complicate matters, he dies after that. So Castiel makes his homosexual declaration of love and then dies, which plays into a timeless Hollywood trope of 'Kill the gays'. We give and then we take away." – "Supernatural's Misha Collins confirms Castiel is gay and in love with Dean", (11 November 2020).
Taking all these sources into account and in accordance with WP:VERIFY, it is now legitimate to describe Castiel as gay.
As for the character having had female love interests during the series: I suppose that many people will argue that the coming out process is complicated, not everyone comes to terms with their sexual orientation right way, and closeted homosexuals often have beards to hide behind. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 11:41, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
@Pyxis Solitary: The show itself, and the article linked below, say how Angels work in the shows universe. When they’re not possessing a body, their true forms don’t have a gender and Castiel has never chosen to identify with a gender either. The character was also in a female body for decades. So why would being love with Dean automatically make him gay? https://screenrant.com/supernatural-angels-trivia-facts/ Kte95 (talk) 23:45, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
@Kte95: "So why would being love with Dean automatically make him gay? Because that's what the actor that played Castiel said. And so far, no one involved in the production of the series (network, producers, writers) has disputed it. I never watched Supernatural. All I know about the series is what I've read about it, and ScreenRant and PopBuzz are reliable sources for entertainment news and information. Sometimes there are series that receive little or no media coverage and it is very difficult or not possible to include reliable sources for any LGBT characters in a series -- but that's not the case with Supernatural. Pyxis Solitary (yak). L not Q. 10:28, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
