Talk:List of current United Kingdom MPs

Contested deletion edit

This article should not be speedy deleted as being recently created, having no relevant page history and duplicating an existing English Wikipedia topic, because there is no sortable list of current MPs, their majorities, length of service etc. There are lists of MPs elected at a given election, but these are not, by their nature, dynamic and do not take account of by-elections or future elections.

I do feel that the person flagging this page has not even looked at it, since the page it supposedly duplicates is clearly not providing the same information. --Steve cov (talk) 12:59, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Before putting it what will amount to a significant amount of labour (no pun intended), I would have suggested raising the question of the additional data columns and sortability on Talk:List of MPs for English constituencies 2010–, etc. But if going ahead with building this table, I would suggest adding a reference for each line from the source(s) providing each Date of Birth and Majority? Declining speedy edit

I've declined a speedy for duplication as this list contains information different to that in the other list. If it comes to a 'one or t'other' situation, this one is possibly of more value, in my opinion. Peridon (talk) 13:34, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re-write edit

I suggest this page be re-written to redirect readers to the four existing articles that list current MPs: List of MPs for Welsh constituencies 2010–, List of MPs for English constituencies 2010–, List of MPs for constituencies in Scotland 2010–, and List of MPs for constituencies in Northern Ireland 2010–. I didn't get a chance to respond to your clarification at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of current United Kingdom MPs before the discussion was closed, but you helpfully raise the same line of thought above. So, my question is:
Why not instead merge the above lists into the single list at this new page?
Making the combined table sortable and including a "Country" column would give readers the choice between identifying MPs by constituency name, country, party, etc.
In addition to being much much more convenient for those readers who want to know about MPs from more than one country, a single list of current MPs would be easier for editors to maintain (and protect from vandalism) than lists on four separate pages.
Aside from the practical considerations, in principle MPs have equal constitutional status at Westminster, so there is no overwhelming logic for not having a master list.
(I realise we would need to notify the talk pages of the other lists before starting a formal split/merger discussion, but I'd like to ensure that we understand each other before kicking off a wider debate. Also, we need to resolve the split/merger issue before we move on to secondary issues such as the exact content and template capabilities.)

If this page is a sortable list of all MPs, I do not believe I will be able to access it. If I had the patience to wait the several minutes for it to load then I might be able to read it, but I still wouldn't be able to edit it. Neither my computer nor my connection can handle pages that large with complicated template transclusions. I very much doubt whether I'm alone in that. I'm not opposed to testing that on the smaller articles. If the English one still loaded after any changes, my concerns would be moot. DrKiernan (talk) 18:53, 19 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Support re-writing the articles into a single sortable list. All MPs have essentially the same constitutional status and you should be able to read them in their totality. FOARP (talk) 12:56, 2 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
