The headquarters for Gannett and USA Today are not in Langley (north relative to downtown McLean), but just south of the toll road in the WestPark section of Tyson's Corner (south to McLean). SterlingNorth 29 June 2005 06:10 (UTC)
I think the "American Dad" reference is irrelevant and useless.
This should be a disambiguation page. The Langley in Fairfax County is only one of two Langleys in Virginia. The other, located in York County in coastal Virginia, is home to NASA's Langley Research Center and Langley Air Force Base.
- Apparently it's not very significant, if it's not even mentioned on York County, Virginia. There's no need to make a dab page here, just link to other relevant article at the top. Dab notices are typically only need for disambiguating between 3+ articles. -Silence 00:45, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, Langley Air Force Base, Langley Research Center and Langley Speedway each seem "significant" enough to warrant Wikipedia entries of their own. After poking around a bit more, I figured out that Mapquest was wrong; apparently the coastal Langley is part of the City of Hampton, not the adjoining County of York. I guess you could say this Langley isn't "significant" in that it isn't a city or town in its own right, but then again, the same can be said of the Langley that is the subject of this article.
Metonyms
Synonyms are words that can mean the same thing. Metonyms are words that do ``not`` mean the same thing, but they're used that way anyway. Langley refers to a town in Virginia, and the CIA is a federal agency. They are in no way synonyms. But since people sometimes say Langley to refer to the CIA, Langley becomes a metonym for the CIA. Namesake
Is Langley named after any specific person? For example, Langley AFB is (see the Langley AFB article). I assume Langley, VA is named after some farmer who lived there many years ago. But that is just a guess. If someone knows, can they add this to the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.110.238.175 (talk) 16:48, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- I always assumed that Langley, VA was named for Samuel Pierpont Langley, as was Langley AFB. However, I know of no connection between Samuel Pierpont Langley and that part of Virginia. He was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, which is based in nearby Washington, DC, but other than that I don't know of a connection. --rogerd (talk) 13:19, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
CIA
Both the CIA box and category deserve to stay since Langley is first associated with the intelligence body.--67.84.73.254 (talk) 15:00, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
