Editor's Notes: July 21, 2009 (AMorozov)
Created and finished the main body of text today, pictures will follow. I originally picked up Kwakiutl Art by Hawthorn so I could create a stub on this, but before I knew it it turned into a full article. I feel that this includes a good outline of Kwakwaka'wakw visual arts. Music is found on a different page (Kwakwaka'wakw music). A few suggestions for future editors to improve this article:
- The mask section is probably detailed enough for an encyclopedia, but I believe much more could be said about totems and the miscellaneous trinkets.
- More is needed on what precisely separates the Kwakwaka'wakw style from other Northwest Coast styles.
- A separate article on Kwakwaka'wakw dance should need to be created to include the other major rituals (Atlakim, Dluwalakha, Winalagilis etc).
- A subarticle is probably needed to fully describe the tsetseka tradition.
- A basic comparison with similar dances of other Northwest peoples would be informative.
- Key info on construction and carving techniques.
- Most importantly, more secondary sources. The current one source, though very detailed with inline cites, is simply not enough. Please remember to cite page numbers in a similar fashion.
