Cleanup edit

During my editing of this page, I noticed that one of the articles (Robert Kurz) links to the German Wikipedia. I am not sure whether this should be the case, or whether an English equivalent should exist before a link is provided to it. Therefore, I have placed a tag on the page requesting cleanup. I hope this is OK, and that the other edits I have performed will be of use. Cheers 217.43.195.134 19:41, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Merge I am pretty much sure people quite often dont quite remember whether it is Kurz or Kurtz. (The merger ttraget must be "Kurz", because it is the original German word.) Lokys dar Vienas (talk) 01:14, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support the merge, but in the opposite direction. The question of the direction is not what is more appropriate in the language of origin, but rather what is more natural in English now. As Kurtz (surname) is more common than Kurz (surname), and Kurtz (surname) has about 4x as many page-views as Kurz (surname), the direction of the merge should be (Recognizability and Naturalness) to Kurtz on '.en'. • Typically we merge if topics are generally interchangeable. Certainly these are probably pronounced the same by the average English reader, but even an English reader would typically check the spelling of the surname when writing it down and not assume they can just arbitrarily spell it wrong. This has little to do with choosing which variant gets more usage, but the article title criteria of having to be based on sources and precise. Also, if a reader actually knows they're looking for a Kurz, giving them a much larger list where Kurtz'es are combined is just bad for navigation. @Joy: People don't always have the opportunity of seeing the name written - for example, if they hear a name on a radio programme and the try to look it up. This seems to be the experience of many editors, as you can see from the number of Kurz entries currently on the Kurtz (surname) page; editors reasonably expect frequent confusion or mis-spelling between the two, hence the utility of merging the lists. Randomness introduced by what could be a single editor (I didn't check) should not be used as some sort of a precedent about average editor behavior, let alone average reader behavior. Common typos are typically resolved with disambiguation tools like hatnotes. --Joy (talk) 20:52, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
