Unless there is a real pressing reason to keep this comment in the article, there is no need for it. It certainly doesn't belong in the first paragraph.

Maritial Status Error

It says at the begining of the article that Kirk is divorced but later on it says that hes 'happily married to Lani' Has he actually gotten divorced recently or is this a mistake? --Mike 14:32, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Plagiarism

I added a short note regarding his rank on the Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Readded section

An editor, likely not a guitar player, deleted the instrument section. Just about every notable guitar player has a "gear list" section. The section could use some detailed references and some cleanup. But it doesn't warrant deletion as "unencyclopedic". It might seem that way to previous "deletion" editor because they know nothing about guitars. But to a player that type of "technical" info is all they like to read. It's informative and intersting... albeit... only to guitar players. But their interests need not be discriminated against as unencyclopedic simply because another editor unfamiliar witht he subject doesn't understand the lingo... or the significance. 156.34.208.175 (talk) 01:17, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

About the .10/.52 string gauge…

Obviously, Kirk Hammet DOES NOT use a .10/.52 string gauge on his guitars. Let me explain why. All guitarists (including me) know that Kirk has his guitars equipped with an OFR (Original Floyd Rose) tremolo unit. On guitars with such an unit, .10/.52 string gauge would cause severe bad neck curving, and it is not possible not correctly set up the whole instrument (tremolo parallelism, intonation, neck curving), especially the tremolo : OFR and similar floating tremolos need springs, on the back on the guitar, to achieve a compromise betweend string tension and spring tension so that the tremolo unit's plate has to be parallel to the body of the guitar to have an instrument correctly set up.

A .10/.52 string gauge delivers too much tension : event with all springs installed (which are 5 max.), the tremolo unit would be angled, making dives impossible, and the string action far too high.

Reliable sources show that he's using a .9/.46 or .10/.46 string gauge rather than a .10/.52 (.9/.46 and .10/.46, on 25.5-inch scale guitars, gives the same playing feeling that 24.75-inch [gibson] scale guitars with .10/.52 string gauge).

Nevertheless, I agree that he can be using .10/.52 on shorter scale guitars (such as his Gibsons, since Gibsons are 24.75-inch scale guitars) to keep the same feeling from a guitar to another.

Sorry, not true! 010-052 strings work fine on floyd rose equipped guitars. At least my 80s Jackson Strat has no problems with it and very low string action. I don´t know what Hammett uses, but you can definitely setup a floyd rose guitar to handle thicker strings. And if you can not, a experienced guitar tech will be able. Divorce

In A Year and A Half In The Life Of Metallica (A 1992 documentary about the making of the Black Album), They say that the album ended three marriages. Wikipedia already covers Lars Ulrichs divorce in 1991 because of the album, but Kirk Hammett and Bob Rock (The other two) have nothing mentioned in the articles about the divorces, or frankly anything about their personal lives. If anyone ever includes a section in Kirk Hammett about marriage or personal life, they should include that he divorced during the making of the black album. I'm a little lazy to go finding the sources and such right now, so I'm just going to leave a few tools for anyone interested in tackling the project Maelstromlusby (talk) 02:09, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

He is a descended nephew of the American detective novelist |Dashiell Hammett]]. He attended De Anza High School in Richmond, California. While attending De Anza High School he met Les Claypool of Primus and they remain close friends.

Paragraph removal request

I'd like to ask a contributor to remove this paragraph:

"In 1986, during the band's European leg of their tour to support "Master of Puppets", Hammett, and bassist Cliff Burton had a dispute over sleeping arrangements, and it was decided by a card draw, in which Burton won by picking the Ace of Spades, once the draw was completed, Burton looked at Hammett, and stated "I want your bunk," to which Hammett stated that he might be able to sleep better in the front of the bus. Early the following morning, the tour bus slid off the road, and overturned, killing Burton. Hammett once stated in an interview that he once thought that it easily could've been him, instead of Burton."

Suggest remove "11th greatest guitarist of all time" and using Rolling Stone Lists as relevant sources across Wikipedia

Rolling Stone lists rankings I supposed can be put into a curiosity section, but should not be considered relevant information about a person. The lists are simply heavily partial, and commercially driven dribble. In general, I don't think the subjective lists of any magazine should be used as a relevant source.

Not done: This comes up periodically on Metallica's talk page, most recently here. Consensus seems to be to leave the primary genre as heavy metal, as you can't say that everything that Kirk Hammett or Metallica has done in the last 30 years would be considered thrash metal. My recommendation if you would like to see it changed would be to discuss it on Talk:Metallica.
