Relationship between Champasak and Champa edit

Is there are a relation between Champasak and Champa? Gryffindor (talk) 08:58, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm wondering the same thing, given that they're linked. I don't think there is, especially since Champasak is Lao (Tai people) and Champa is Malayo-Polynesian.118.70.125.46 (talk) 06:08, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

'Champa' is the Lao word for plumera or frangipani (actually this comes directly from the Hindi) - the national flower of Laos. Many people, including many Lao, believe this is the origin of the name. However this is not the root of the Champasak Kingdom. Indeed it is much more likely to have its origins from Cham (as in the austronesian people of the Champa kingdom) who exerted a major influence in the area and probably built a Shaivist temple near Champasak town at present day Wat Phu as early as the 5th century. 'pa sak' is the lao for teak forest. Thus Champasak is likely to be the "teak forest of the Cham". So yes, as far as my understanding goes Champasak is related to the Malayo-Polynesian 'Cham', but the 'pa' and the 'sak' come from Lao (Tai). (Alanboatman (talk) 04:54, 16 May 2012 (UTC))Reply
