Was his name originally "Pester?"

In this YouTube video:

..at the 0:59 mark, Kermit can be heard introducing himself as "Pester" instead of Kermit. 184.57.129.13 (talk) 15:17, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

It's a western sketch, so it's probably just the character's name. - BilCat (talk) 15:30, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

Anachronism

It's false that Kermit became a frog "shortly" before Sesame Street depending on how you interpret "shortly". SS started in '69 and I remember seeing him with Dave Garroway on the Today show and elsewhere in the early sixties. Lycurgus (talk) 02:49, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, this sounds like a vague wording. Best solution would be to have actual cited information about it. But if we don't have specific information, best not to make it sound like there actually is information about it. Even the first sentence in the paragraph is a problem (unrelated but while we're fixing...) beacause "seen" and "status" could mean either "public opinion" rather than "visual appearance". How about:
Initially, Kermit's form was lizard-like. He subsequently made a number of television appearances before his design as a frog was established, sometime prior to being on Sesame Street. His collar was added at the time to make him seem more froglike and to conceal the seam between his head and body.

Upon reflection, the problem actually is with the notion of "becoming a frog". It was a puppet, whose character was already well formed in the early 60s.Most of the Henson characters, Miss Piggy, Mr. Snuffawhosits, etc. excepted are like that, i.e. fanciful puppet creations rather than faithful puppet characterizations of a real animal. Piggy and Kermit were anchored in real species but most were not. Lycurgus (talk) 14:23, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

UPDATE - Johnny Carson himself refers to Kermit by saying "Remember Kermit the Frog?" during an episode of the Tonight Show from New Year's Eve 1965 - so he must have been already established as a frog character by this time.
