Merriam-Webster is a respected source, but they are wrong about the earliest appearance of this phrase. Here is one much earlier example: In the 1969 film (copyright 1968) Sweet Charity, the title character tries to prevent a man from backing out of marrying her by suggesting that she could improve the way she dresses and the way she speaks; he interrupts her to say "Charity, it's not you, it's me".
