Horace Harding

Interestingly, I've always called the whole thing the LIE; I thought the Horace Harding Expressway was the name of the street-level service roads that run along side the LIE. By the way, does anyone have a picture of the man Horace Harding that could be uploaded? 98.221.131.77 (talk) 08:52, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

technically correct or incorrect?

Since I-495 extends from a city outward, it is technically a spur, which should have an odd first digit. Even first digits are usually assigned to bypasses and beltways. However, since I-495 connects to three other interstates (I-278, I-678, and I-295), the even first digit is technically correct.

Yeah, it was supposed to cross the Long Island Sound and meet I-95 in RI or CT -JGCarter

DanTD: The image you referenced above for Exit 70A is really intriguing. Is it possible for you to put any others that you may have up on the I-495 page? This seems like the appropriate venue for such images to be seen by anyone interested, and it's free :) They could be linked to the various bullets shown on the "proposed interchanges" section (and then the "no citations" flag could be removed).

I uplaoded the link for just that purpose, as well as one about NY 27A in Bay Shore. However, Wikipedia is threatening to delete both of them. I wish I could post it in the proposed interchanges section, without taking up a whole bunch of space. DanTD 13:13, 31 July 2006 (EST)

Exit List Table

It would be nice to convert the exit list here into a table. I've been looking through other interstate's pages, and there does not seem to be any standard format (indeed, the WP:Interstates just calls for exit lists "in table form" or some other vague language). All the samples I've looked at are slightly different. I think something like the following might work best for the LIE:

Exit #; Mile; Location of Exit; Route/Road Name; Any Notes

We could employ a similar color scheme for "decommissioned", "proposed", etc., as on the NYS route tables.

Any thoughts?

If you or somebody else is willing to work on it, go ahead. I'm having a hard enough time adjusting to the new intersection boxes, but somebody has already started an Exit table for New York State Route 27, that so far can only be found in the talk section of that page.----DanTD 18:33, 3 August 2006 (EST)

Major Junctions

I noticed the only major junctions noted are the ones in Queens. Surely Exit 22 (Grand Central Parkway), Exit 31 (Cross Island Parkway), Exit 42 (Northern State Parkway), Exit 44 (NY 135), Exit 53 (Sagtikos State Parkway-Wicks Road-Commack Road), and exit 68 (William Floyd Parkway) are all major junctions.

Nobody seemed to care so I went on and added it in Jgcarter 14:25, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Locations of proposed interchanges

If anybody needs any mileage info regarding the proposed interchanges with Wantagh and Bethpage Parkway extensions, here's the best I can give you from those 1/10 mile markers;

• Wantagh Parkway Extension location(Exit 39A):495I-0302-1083.
• Bethpage Parkway Extension location(Exit 47):495I-0302-1149.

Merge from NY 495?

NY 495 is signed as part of I-495, and really has no independent history. I think it would make sense to merge the two. --NE2 00:43, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

• Oppose The whole 495 story is a fascinating one, but I think these are three separate articles for NJ 495, NY 495 and I-495 NY. I'd love to see sources for the changes in designation of portions of I-495, but I couldn't find anything in The New York Times. Alansohn 01:32, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

    • Sure, there's overlap on all three articles. There's already enough confusion as to the identity of each of these roadways, and the best way to clarify this is to keep them separate and to refer to the articles and what portions of NJ/NY/Interstate 495 are which. • Undecided Originally, I would've supported such a merge, but Alansohn has made some plausible, if not regertable arguments against it. I would've loved to see NJ 495 and Mid-Manhattan Expressway as sub-components of Interstate 495 (New York), much like the Staten Island Expressway, Gowanus Expressway, and Brooklyn-Queens Expressway are sub-compnents of Interstate 278 (New York) But the anti-highway zealotry of the New York Tri-State area has made sure that can never happen. Still, most signs that I've seen seen along, and pointing towards the Long Island Expressway in Manhattan & Western Queens, have said it was "Interstate" 495. ----DanTD 02:48, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Recent move

Freewayguy recently moved this article to Interstate 495 and State Route 495 (New York). I have moved it back, however, was this a good idea to move it? Or shall we keep NY 495 seperate? ^Mitch32^contribs 20:51, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Purple tag

Someone told me merge SR 495 with I-495. Those two routes I believe is similar. I've check it on the map, one of my schools teacher gave to me. The SR 495 is toll-often display in green on most maps, and I-495 is normal frwy sections.--Freewayguy ^{Msg USC} 18:01, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Public Domain?

I-495 in New Jersey

I commute through Union City, NJ daily. Worth noting is that the onramp to Jersey SR-3 (lincoln tunnel approach) from northbound JF Kennedy Blvd is signed as I-495. To rephrase: if you take JF Kennedy Blvd North and get on Jersey SR-3, it is signed as I-495. It is indeed using the blue interstate highway logo.

Long Island Expressway in Nassau

As a resident of Nassau County who uses the LIE frequently, I know that I-495 is actually called the Long Island Expressway in Nassau. The line early in the article should be changed. Hbomberman (talk) 03:21, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Sentence 3

"The portion of I-495 in Suffolk County is known as the Long Island Expressway (LIE), a name commonly applied to the entirety of I-495." This appears to say that part of the highway is known as the LIE, and the whole thing is known as the LIE, too. If some distinction is being made between part of the highway, and the entire length of the highway, I can't imagine what it might be. Arcanicus (talk) 07:16, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Not quite. What the sentence is saying is that the Suffolk County section is known as and named the LIE, while the rest of I-495 is named otherwise but still frequently referred to as the LIE. The distinction seems pretty clear to me. – TMF (talk) 21:34, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Harry Chapin

First of all, why is this at the top of the 'History' section, which should be in chronological order. Secondly, why is this even in this article at all? Harry's death is described in more detail on his Wikipedia entry. I don't believe this is relevant enough to this Interstate to keep. If no one disagrees, I'll remove the second in a week's time. Unsigned portions of the highway

"At this point, I-495 becomes the unsigned highway NY 495, although it is still signed as an Interstate Highway."

First off, this phrasing is nonsense. How is a highway signed and unsigned at the same time? Second, I doubt that the highway is unsigned at all. Checking it out on Google Maps I see overhead signs on the highway and on access roads/ramps referring to it as both I-495 and the LI Expressway. Mileage

Can someone explain to me, how it says this highway is 66.38 miles in length, while the exit list box lists exit 73 at milepost 71.02. I saw the reference with the 66.38 value but it just seems rather unusual. Perhaps I’m missing something here. Tinton5 (talk) 06:07, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Untitled

The road was known as NY-495 from the time it was built (before the Interstate system began) until the 1970's when it became federalized. This perhaps explains why its numbering is a violation of Interstate numbering rules (starting with an even number it should be a belt AROUND a city, but it's a spur INTO a city). 68.196.1.236 (talk) 01:36, 10 January 2021 (UTC)captcrisis
