Jobs in the sale and repair of motor vehicles edit

The article says:

In 2008 the total number of full-time equivalent jobs was 4,903. ... The number of jobs in the tertiary sector was 4,154. In the tertiary sector; 1,145 or 27.6% were in the sale or repair of motor vehicles, ..., 1,170 or 28.2% were in a hotel or restaurant, ...

So the largest proportion of jobs is in hotels and restaurants, which shouldn't surprise anybody. But almost as many people (over 20% of the total) work in the sale and repair of motor vehicles, which I find very surprising indeed. Interlaken isn't somewhere I associate with the motor industry or with huge car dealerships. I think this figure is sufficiently counter-intuitive to deserve further explanation in the article. The source for that number is given at the end of the article, however, I found that BFS has changed what data is available and you can no longer find the specific table that I used to create this section. That being said, the specific category is called HANDEL, INSTANDHALTUNG UND REPARATUR VON MOTORFAHRZEUGE or in English TRADE, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF MOTOR VEHICLES. So the category seems to include more than just manufacturers and car dealerships. It may include large machinery sales and maintenance and might even include things like truck drivers. Based on my copy of the data, it looks like this category is about 27% of the full time equivalent positions in all of Switzerland, so the 27.6% in Interlaken matches the average. Ok, I was finally able to find the detailed description of this class NOGA 2008. From the description, "This section includes wholesale and retail sale (i.e. sale without transformation) of any type of goods, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise. Wholesaling and retailing are the final steps in the distribution of merchandise. Also included in this section are the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles."Tobyc75 (talk) 22:11, 12 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
