George Spanos

Fellow Ikarians, George Spanos was a great hero but don't you think all that information on him should be in a separate article?

George Spanos is a great Ikarian (and therefore Greek) hero, having played a significant role in Ikarian history (the independence of Ikaria from Turkey, which led to "enosis" with Greece soon thereafter). Therefore, the reference to him in this article is necessary and appropriate to providing the reader some knowledge of the important persons in the history of Ikaria (not to mention giving visitors to Ikaria information necessary to understanding why his bust stands in the "National Resistance Square" in the town of Evdilos). A separate, biographical, article on George Spanos would also be appropriate, but not at the expense of the brief reference to him in this article.Aegean1 (talk) 19:32, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately I do not see the names of any other heroes in the article. If you notice the phrasing it says "is honored as THE hero of the Icarian Revolution." As if there was only one hero. The revolution was a collective effort of many. Some had just as important if not more important roles than Spano's. For some of his relatives / residents of the northern part of the island to sphetirize the glory is ... unikarian and tiring. N3krom4nc3r (talk) 07:47, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Reply to N3krom4nc3r: no one is trying to spheterize any glory and I'm sorry you feel that way . . . no one is saying that the revolution was not the collective effort of many. There were others who also risked their lives. But the fact is that only one person lost his life in the revolution, and that was George Spanos, and it is the Ikarians who have honored him, not only his relatives, by placing his bust in a place of honor - the square near the main church of Evdilos. You mention the residents of the northern part of the island, but residents of the southern part of the island who know Ikarian history, also refer to him as the hero of the revolution. By so doing, they recognize he gave his life in a historic cause, they do not imply in any way that there were no other brave men or women who stood up to the Turkish occupiers and risked their lives in so doing. So I would ask you to at least reconsider your view that what the Ikarians have done is "unikarian and tiring." In the interest of full disclosure, yes, I am one of George Spanos' descendants and I am, of course, proud of him. But I did not create the reference to him as the hero of the Ikarian revolution, others did who were and are not my relatives; they were and are fellow Ikarians who refer to him in these words. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aegean1 (talk • contribs) 03:09, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Foúrnoi Korséon (Φούρνοι Κορσέων) (?)

Since this article is about the island of Icaria, should Fournoi Korseon be included? It isn't even on Icaria island. Backspace 08:01, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

changes

1.) about the picture of Agios Kirikos the caption reads "Agios Kyrikos, the capital of Icaria in the sixth century b.c" ???? Where in the world did this come from? Unless some major archaelogical find has been made that only the writer of the caption knows about, then it is incorrect.

2.) If there is one monument that most people (greek and foreign)know,it is the Tower of Drakano, which is one of the best preseved towers of it's kind in Greece. Not only isn't there a picture of the the tower but it isn't even refered to in the monuments paragraph. Instead of having this as the first central picture, we have a picture of Armenisti.

Though I too love the village, it is in no way the hallmark of the island. One should have the cultivation to discern that the architectural style of Armenisti today (cermaic , cementroofs) is not indicative of the icarian style. Nor should petty economic , tourist interests be the guide of the info provided in the article.

3.) There is no further reading link , something I would like to start soon

1.)the scope of the article is to inform the reader about the island and not about the criminal organization which someone added in an extensive manner ,without any prior discussion , adding false misleading info and of course not cited.Here the intention of the editor was to create a negative impression of the island to the reader, as a breeding ground of criminals etc. While they were of icarian decent, they could not be refered to as "natives".Nor were they arrested there. The info regarding the organization has no correlation to the island and the article.

2.) The official website of the island is www.icaria.gr and not www.ikaria.gr which deceitfuly presents itself as the official website and which is privately owned by a non icarian and is used for personal profit.

3.) While for the majority of the life of this article there were a few non profit official websites linked, before I started my editing yesterday, someone erased all and left the private owned www.ikaria.gr. This of course was unacceptable and I proceeded to add the links again or at least some of them. N3krom4nc3r (talk) 07:47, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I Can't see Ikaria!

Where is Ikaria on the Greece map? I can barely see it! How about you put Ikaria in a different color, not a different shade. I would appreciate it if you do. Typingwestern015 (talk) 16:38, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Icaria or Ikaria? Suggest a move/name change

I suggest that Ikaria is the more logical and internally-consistent spelling to use, and thus propose a move accordingly. Wildaker (talk) 15:30, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Make it red on the map

It's visibility is ok right now in blue, but red would make it stand out and be even more visible from the purple Greek islands background. Besides, after all, Icaria's other name is "The Red Rock" lol HTBrooks (talk) 14:59, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

How is this significant?

"they were at risk of becoming part of the Italian Aegean Empire."

Considering that the island was occupied during WWII anyway, and considering how terrible that was and that it wasn't much better before, and considering that the Italian-occupied Greek islands were ceded to Greece after the war, how is this statement significant?

How would the situation have been any different? And what does the statement even mean, exactly? Icaria was in no position to defend itself, so the fact that Italy didn't occupy it that early on mainly signified that Italy wasn't interested, meaning Icaria was not at risk. On the other hand, given the later occupation, saying that it was at risk is wrong too since for all intents and purposes it actually happened.
