I will be adding new content and editing the old content on this article for the next couple of weeks. The new content that I am planning on adding will look at the interactions between ID/LP Grammar and parsing. The Minimalist Program

I would like to suggest using a better example of how some proposals within the Minimalist Program attempt to distinguish between immediate dominance and linear precedence. The main problem with the current example is that it is most strongly associated with Richard Kayne's 1994 monograph The Antisymmetry of Syntax, which did not attempt to distinguish ID from LP, but rather claimed that LP was directly derived from a combination of ID and asymmetric c-command. Kayne then claimed that Specifier-Head-Complement was the universal base word order, with all other orders being derived via movement. If I understand correctly, this is nothing at all like an ID/LP grammar; in fact, it much more closely resembles traditional phrase structure rules, with ID and LP specified by a single rule (or, as in the Minimalist Program, by the application of Merge).

However, recent papers either authored or co-authored by Chomsky have proposed that linear order is not a part of syntax, and is instead the result of externalization. That is, a linear order is assigned simply because of the fact that elements have to be arranged in a temporal order when they are articulated (either through oral or, in the case of sign languages, manual means). This sounds much more like a true attempt to distinguish between ID and LP than anything Richard Kayne has proposed. Here are a few links to the papers in which this idea is mentioned:

For the reasons mentioned above, I intend to remove the references to the work of Richard Kayne and replace them with the idea proposed by Chomsky and his collaborators, which I feel presents a better comparison between ID/LP grammar and Minimalism.
