Both FishBase and Catalog of Fishes list this species as Hypoptopoma sternoptychum and Nannoptopoma sternoptychum as its synonym. Both Nannoptopoma species were reassigned to the genus Hypoptopoma by Aquino & Schaefer in 2010 (Systematics of the genus Hypoptopoma Günther, 1868 ‪(‬Siluriformes, Loricariidae‪)‬).
