Structure

• Move "Molecular phylogenetic studies determined....." and the "Trochilidae..." cladogram into "Evolution". Put them in fact in a new subsection there called "Phylogeny" or something of that sort, along with the text of the current "Evolution".
  • Done.

• Merge "Wingbeats and flight stability" into "Aerodynamics of flight"; rename the section "Flight", and POSSIBLY create new subsections as the material dictates.
  • Done.

• Merge "Feather colors" into "Sexual dimorphisms".
  • Done.

• Merge the very short and single-species/single-sourced/primary "Bill evolution" into main "Evolution" section.
  • Done.

• WTF is "sonation"? - please define and wikilink it as we have an article on it.
  • Done. Changed to simpler subhead, "Feather sounds".

• There should not be "(Note: G-force...)" and "By comparison to humans ... banked turn." in the main text. If it's a note worth keeping, put all of it in a footnote using the efn template.)
  • Done.

• "In myth and culture" is a bitty gossipy half-cited assemblage of trivia. Please replace it with a reliably-sourced text, removing any items of gossip and trivia.
  • Done.

• Suggest you put the Range section at the top after the missing "Description" section. The article will then begin (Lead), Description (including a merged "Superficially similar species", no separate heading needed), Range, Taxonomy, Evolution, etc.
  • Done.

• The Description section needs to say that hummingbirds are small, long-winged, long-beaked, actively-hovering birds, that sort of thing; and that they're not to be confused with sunbirds or hummingbird moths.
  • Done.
    • You've done a really nice job, but the "Superficially similar species" with its sunbirds and hummingbird moths still needs to be moved to "Description".
      • Done.

• Please remove the two (sphinx) hawkmoth entries from "See also" and discuss them as much as needed in the Description section.
  • Done.
    • I don't see them in Description?
      • Moved and edited as a subsection under Description.

• Rename "Diet and specializations for food gathering" to "Feeding".
  • Done.

• I'm not convinced of the value of portal links in articles, once you're in an article you don't need the portal any more (if you ever did); but if we arguably think the Birds one not wholly useless, the Animals and Biology ones are way off beam. Best ditch them now.
  • Done.

Language

• "hovering in mid-air" is tautologous: just say "hovering".
  • Done.

Links

• Bee hummingbird needs to be wikilinked.
  • Done.

• The article contains many overlinks. Best run the "Highlight duplicate links" tool and remove the surplus.
  • The HDL tool reported no duplicates. Will double-check overlinks.

Images

• "Range" would be well illustrated with a distribution map, but this is not a GA requirement.
  • No good maps in Commons for the general hummingbird article.

• Most of the mega-caption "A trail of wake vortices generated by a hummingbird's flight discovered after training a bird to fly through a cloud of neutrally buoyant, helium-filled soap bubbles and recording airflows in the wake with stereo photography.[110]" is not about hummingbirds at all: it is really an aside on method and should be a footnote (use the efn template and remember to create a Notes section with a notelist template). The caption should just say "Hummingbirds generate a trail of wake vortices while they hover.[note 1]"
  • Rather than creating a note, I added specific sources showing wake creation under hummingbird wings during hovering.

Surplus / decorative images

Article is definitely image-heavy, with a suspicion that people have added their favourite image rather than considered what was needed. Here are some of the more egregious cases:

• Lead section does not need (two) images below infobox.
  • Replaced with two images of the bee hummingbird.
    • Um, there should be NO images in lead other than the infobox.
      • Fixed by Description section.

• Haeckel image appears decorative in Taxonomy, as does "Juvenile Anna's hummingbird with tongue extended".
  • Removed or moved to Gallery (tentative).

• "Hummingbird building a nest in San Diego Zoo, video" has nothing to do with Evolution section.
  • Removed.

• Violet-tailed sylph male and female images should be grouped side-by-side (multiple image template) with a single caption to show the dimorphism clearly. You might like to consider making the bodies of the two birds the same size so the long tail of the male projects down below the female image.
  • Seeing no movement on this one, I've boldly gone and illustrated what I mean. You can of course adapt this as you like but I think you'll see that it makes the point clearly, which the previous arrangement basically didn't.
    • Simple, effective solution and display. Thanks.

• "Calpyte anna perched" has no visible purpose. Has it got anything to do with those seed-pods or is the image purely decorative?
  • Removed.

• "Incubating in Copiapó, Chile" has nothing to do with "Vision".
  • Removed.

• "Nest with two nestlings in Santa Monica, California" has nothing to do with "Hemoglobin adaptation to altitude".
  • Removed.

• "Feeding two nestlings in Grand Teton National Park" has nothing to do with "Heat dissipation". It might be useful in the (ahem) missing life-cycle section.

• "Fallen Anna's hummingbird nest in Ventura County, California, shown next to a toothpick for scale" has nothing to do with "Kidney function".
  • Moved to Gallery (tentative).

• "Female ruby-throated hummingbird perched in Hudson, Ohio" has nothing to do with "Song and vocal learning".
  • Removed.

• "Hummingbirds feeding at 1500 fps" has nothing to do with "Song and vocal learning" either, but might find a place in "Diet and specializations for food gathering".
  • Moved.

• "Hummingbird feeding from a flower in the University of California Botanical Garden" has nothing to do with "Torpor, and nor does "Hummingbird with yellow pollen on its beak in the University of California Botanical Garden".
  • Removed.

• "Hummingbird chicks in a nest in a cactus in Mesa, Arizona" and "Hummingbird adult in its nest in a cactus in Mesa, Arizona" have nothing to do with "Courtship dives". They might possibly find a place in Reproduction but there's only so many birds-on-nest images a section can cope with before it collapses under the weight.
  • Removed.

• "A female Anna's hummingbird perched on a small branch" has nothing to do with "Migration", at least if it does, the caption needs to be rewritten. That brings the Anna's score up to 2...
  • Removed.

Sources

• I've tagged citations needed in "Diet" (feeding) and "In myth and culture".
  • Fixed.
    • Well there are still 2 "citation needed" tags in "Feeding".
      • Done.

• Can't see any value in the obsolete Encyclopedia Americana box in "External links". Or in the Wiktionary box for that matter, it's just clutter - we know "hummingbird" is made of "humming" and "bird".
  • Removed.

References

• Refs 185, 187, 188, and 189 need a publisher or website.
  • Fixed/removed.

• Some refs need authors' initials to be punctuated, e.g. 179 "Werness, Hope B" should have "B."; 161 "Avalos, G" etc; 158; 156 "Kim, W" etc; 153 "Li, X" (unless X is the full forename, of course); 147 "Connor J" and some others (e.g. 78, 80, 81 - please check the whole article) are in Vanc format and need to be in Surname, Forenames like the other refs, i.e. "Connor, J." or better "Connor, Jack" as you have given many actual forenames in the citations.
  • Fixed. We have two styles for authors in journal citations: vauthors and first=|last=, mainly using initials provided in citation tools. Following guide in WP:CIT-Variations.
    • Ref 118 is still in Vanc.
      • Many of the refs are in Vanc author style. I used both of the styles mentioned above. CIT-Variations says both are acceptable.
        • Sure it does, but not both at once!
