Talk:Hills District, New South Wales

Untitled edit

most of winston hills is in the city of parramatta.. but there are many other hills such as Rogans, Rouse, Box, McGraths, Seven Hills. and as a part-time resident I don't think that the Hills is particularly affluent, I would use that word to describe the North Shore, or the tiny bit of the district known as Bella Vista. As Baulkham Hills is still a shire (as opposed to a city), half of its land is agricultural.

I would like to have a more precise geographical definition of the Hills District, if one exists. The article mentions that western parts of Hornsby Shire are part of the Hills District, but that is a little vague. Is Dural, for example, considered part of the Hills District? --Alexxx1 21:57, 18 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I agree it should be more precise. I think south-west of Hornsby Shire. Having 'Hill' in a suburb's name does not make it part of the 'Hills District'! Seven Hills definitely isn't. However, I do think the Hills District is relatively affluent - a poorman's North Shore. (Note that the electorates are mostly Liberal). I would include the Epping-Carlingford area, which as stated is part of Parramatta LGA.--Jack Upland 03:23, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

would it be wrong to mention mcmansions?Garrie 05:14, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Didn't you realise that the federal division of Greenway, housing suburbs like Seven Hills is also a Liberal electorate?

What about everyone who receives the Hills District version of the Yellow Pages and it lists the suburbs of the Hills District on the back. They include: Annangrove (BHSC) Baulkham Hills (BHSC) Beecroft (HSC) Carlingford (HSC, BHSC, PCC) Castle Hill (BHSC, HSC) Cherrybrook (HSC Dural (BHSC, HSC) Eastwood (PCC, RCC) Epping (PCC, BHSC, HSC) Kellyville (BHSC, BCC) Parklea (BCC) Pennant Hills (HSC) Seven Hills (BCC) West Pennant Hills (BHSC, HSC) I don't think the Hills District is specifically restricted to just within Baulkham Hills Shire (a lot of places within BHSC like Wisemans Ferry, Sackville & Maroota wouldn't be classed as being part of the 'Hills District) but it used to describe the hilly area east of Blacktown, north of Parramatta, south of the Macquarie towns and west of the North Shore. So really this includes everywhere from Kings Langley and Glenwood in the extreme east of Blacktown City Council to Winston Hills in the north of Parramatta City Council, Box Hill, Kenthurst, Annangrove, Dural in the north of Baulkham Hills Shire and east to West Pennant Hills.

List of suburbs in the Hills District edit

I'm moved this section of text out of the article because I don't really see why this information is being provided twice. Also, what does it mean to say that that the suburbs are 'determined' by their postcode? This information could be retained if clarified and cited. --Alexxx1 (talk/contribs) 08:04, 2 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Suburbs that are in the Hills District are determined by their postcode. The postcodes that are of the hills district are 2155 (Kellyville), 2156 (Annangrove), 2153 (Baulkham Hills), 2154 (Castle Hill), 2158 (Dural), 2126 (Cherrybrook), 2125 (West Pennant Hills), 2118 (Carlingford), 2119 (Beecroft), 2120 (Pennant Hills), 2121 (Epping), 2109 (Macquarie University) and 2122 (Eastwood).

List of suburbs in Hills District in 2017 edit

Over time, the general ideas of what is and isn't in the district have changed. The most general current ideas, to my knowledge include:

  • Hilly terrain
  • North of Parramatta
  • East of Blacktown
  • South of the Hawkesbury River
  • West of Hornsby

These as the definition of the district, however, are too general. The Hills is more defined by roads as its boundary. Some of these roads include Windsor Road in the west, and Boundary Road in the north-west. The entirety of the Hills Shire is included within the district, as residents and the council agree upon this. Residential roads between councils, however, have residents who also consider themselves part of the district. These include Seven Hills Road in the south-west, and Castle Hill Road in the east. This also means that suburbs adjacent to the Hills Shire like Oakville, with no residential streets connecting the two, are not part of the district. Suburbs not within the shire, but in the district include:

  • Carlingford (previously part of the shire, and connected by Pennant Hills Road)
  • Cherrybrook (connected by Highs Road, County Drive, and New Line Road)
  • Galston (connected by Galston and Mid Dural Roads)
  • Kings Langley (connected by Seven Hills Road)
  • North Rocks (previously part of the shire, and connected by Renown, Barclay, and North Rocks Roads)
  • Oatlands (previously part of the shire, and connected by Statham Avenue and Bettington Road)
  • Seven Hills (connected by Seven Hills Road)

This should also mean that suburbs currently listed that do not satisfy this criteria, or do not have a major historic connection with the district as a whole, should not be included. These include:

  • Glenwood (better match with Blacktown area) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ooooh4 (talkcontribs) 08:46, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Laughtondale (better match with Berowra/Hornsby area)
  • North Parramatta (better match with Parramatta area)
  • Northmead (better match with Parramatta area)
  • Quakers Hill (better match with Blacktown area)
  • Randwick (not even close to the area, possibly a mistake?)

I am changing the list of suburbs to match. If you feel this is incorrect, please let me know. Ooooh4 (talk) 08:41, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

2024 -A more current view of what is "The Hills" edit

Words change, meanings change, people change. Usage and definitions change.

Clinging to definitions that might have have some currency decades ago is no use and nor is being dogmatic about something where there is no formal legal, demographic or even generally accepted definition.. so I'm all in favour of being current and pragmatic

This part of the first paragraph is way too confused and tries to ride 2 horses

"Stretching from the M2 Hills Motorway in the south to the Hawkesbury River in the north and Old Windsor Road in the west to Pennant Hills Road and Berowra Creek in the east. The region is often considered to be synonymous with the local government area of The Hills Shire, however in a more expansive sense colloquial definitions can also include surrounding areas such as the western portion of the Hornsby Shire, as well as also sometimes including northern parts of City of Parramatta and Blacktown City Council."

No one seriously would maintain that the Hills LGA provides a definition of "The Hills" so that should go. As should some convoluted notions of where you have to drive to get from 1 Hills area to another

The Hills District Mums - a very popular group with a Facebook and Web presence addressed this question nearly a decade ago in 2015 and said in a light hearted way:

In a bid to keep it simple we think the best criteria to apply is the following:

  • Do you spend too much money at a) Rouse Hill Town Centre and/or b) Castle Towers?
  • Do you look for things to do in the Hills?
  • Do you like to support local Hills businesses where you can?

If so, then you’re a Hills District Mum as far as we’re concerned. Welcome![1]

That definition has got as much currency and weight as any other - and it has the great virtue of avoiding the tortured attempts to determine which road is in and which is out

and just as a postscript; Is there any difference nowadays between what is The Hills and what is North West Sydney? - probably not much but that's a slightly different question for another day LloydGL (talk) 07:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
