A 120 year-old Scientific American may not the best source for a complete article on the Hampshire breed of sheep. It is perhaps a good assumption that the early history of the breed is correct. But the source limitations show in the lack of current descriptions of the breed and its economic value. One of the external links does provide standards mature animal size (275 pounds minimum for rams, 200 pounds minimum for ewes in breeding condition)and a very succinct description of the Hampshire as a large, active sheep with an open face and a mild disposition. <>
