Hi, you did the article on Guglielmi Detachable Coil. I know this procedure was used in 20.000 patients as of 2002. Do you have updated stats or other relevant info? Thanks a lot :^)

I'm sorry I can't give you any statistics in numbers of patients. This procedure is extending worldwide, and there are several new GDC coil manufacturers, so aggregate figures are becoming difficult to find.
There is more information, however most is very technical, and the article still has too few visits to make it worth extending it. If there is any other information you believe should be added, please request it at the article's discussion, which I watch. Then, if possible, I will try to expand it.--JohnWest 17:27, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Actually, my interest his off-wikipedia, as I'm helping a friend with a paper on the subject and would like to have some figures. Thanks anyway.

Cerebral Aneurysms

edit

I removed a long block of text that was copy and pasted from cerebral aneurysm as that text had been edited, and is subject to some debate. The text is still available there. I also believe it is more appropriate to discuss the long-term efficacy of GDC coils in treating cerebral aneurysms on the aneurysm page, as GDC coils themselves can be used in different parts of the body, and this article should be more about the coils themselves (including history, if someone knows more about that) than debates about treatment for aneurysms

Importance

edit

I disaggree that this article is of low importance. No-one outside the field has any idea what one of these is or does; I would imagine that anyone coming across it in another wiki artilce is likely to click the link to find out. If this coil can be used in a number of other procedures apart from aneurisms; if it is so new it is still being studied for its long term effects; if it has the potential to stop us doing dangerous surgery, then it is of mid importance.

  • How does it work?
  • how was it discovered?
  • what other procedures can it be used in?

Thank you for writing this much- please tell us more! IceDragon64 (talk) 12:29, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adding Mechanism of function

edit

I started a new section to address the very valid concerns that IceDragon64 stated above. Specifically I tried to explain how GDC coils work. More work is definitley needed though!THe link to Emory health that I used is great and has lots of information for anyone else interested in adding more.
