Merge

I'm not sure merging is a good idea as there is so much that can be added overtime - filling out the history and the various sections for instance. By all means link it to the scout/wagggs page but I think a merge would result in a huge article in the long run. CuteWombat 20:09, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Image problems

There are some problems with image display on this page. The length of the pictures and amount of text doesn't balance, making things appear in the wrong places. I've tried to fix it but I've not got it right. Can anyone help? (Appeal made on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Scouting too.) Kingbird 21:18, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't know of a perfect way to fix this problem. Here are 4 possible solutions. I suggest you try out option 2:
  1. Make the size of the images even smaller - one problem with this is that it violates the style guidelines, which says it is preferable to avoid specifying a size for the image. The reason for this is that logged in users have a preference setting that let's them choose how big they want images to be. This allows for differences in monitor size, eyesight, etc.
  2. Move the images to the bottom of a page, in a section called Gallery, and use the <gallery></gallery> tags. This also is sometimes frowned upon. The guidelines do say articles should not be a collection of images, but they do not prohibit an article to contain text AND a gallery of images.
  3. Remove the images from the article and put them elsewhere (like commons, if the license allows for it). This has the advantage they are accessible on commons, but not as easily accessible to the article.
  4. Increase the amount of text so it is now longer than the images! (requires work, of course0
I suggest number 4 is the very best option if it is practical, otherwise I suggest number 2. For an example of an artile tht does this, see Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium or Canon EOS 350D. Note that the captions are treated differently than with using thumbnails. Johntex\talk 22:49, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Actually, it seems like the Manual of Style has been updated. At Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Images it now says "If there are too many images in a given article, consider using a gallery." So, you will be on firm ground, guideline-wise, if you use the number 2 option. Johntex\talk 22:52, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for laying out the options clearly. I admit I prefer the look of the article when the pictures are stacked down the right hand side, rather than in a gallery. However, a gallery does look like better practice from the way you state it. It's not just me looking at it, after all. I won't make any changes until other folks have had their say. Whatever happens, the article's already looking a lot better than it did when I finished with it. Kingbird 02:48, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Transfered Material

Quite a lot of UK specific material has recently been transfered from Girl Guide and Girl Scout. It's going to take some work to get it into shape, so please contribute if you can. Kingbird 16:44, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Guideuniform2.jpg

Image:Guideuniform2.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

eight-year-old girls

The current figure for eight-year-old girls in Brownies is one in four. I work at Girlguiding UK so know this figure is correct. Check out this link as evidence: http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/system_pages/small_navigation/press_office/surprising_facts.aspx —Preceding unsigned comment added by Asmirny (talkcontribs) 14:16, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, you should have added the reference to the article. We do not work on what people know to be true, but what is sourced. --Bduke (Discussion) 20:48, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

The Girlguiding UK logo has been changed to show the strapline 'Girls in the Lead'. The logo on this page needs to be updated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.229.22.110 (talk) 15:35, 2 March 2010 (UTC) The girl guiding logo is currently the Trefoil92.13.47.179 (talk) 19:01, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

We don't use straplines (taglines) on logos. They seem to change every year, and some organizations have multiples depending on the audience. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:05, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Girl Guiding Uniform

I think the most current picture of the Guides Uniform is out of date. The uniform shown was discontinued about 3 years ago, anyone care to help?

Good point - it is still worn a lot though as they were well made and there is a thriving 2nd hand market - I'll take a photo of one of my Guides and upload it. Pansy Brandybuck AKA SophiaTalkTCF 12:56, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

The current version reads "Rainbows and Brownies can chose from shorts, shorts, legging or combat style trousers" - "shorts" is repeated. What should it read - "skirts"? or just removed? --Bduke (talk) 02:05, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Single Sex Organisation?

Is guiding still single sex, or has it fallen foul of the same rules and regulations scouting in Britain has?

Yes, Guiding in the UK is still single sex. Girlguiding UK, so their website proclaims, is the largest youth organisation for girls in the UK today. They promote the idea of a "female-only space". For adults, men can be in supporting roles but only women can be leaders. I don't know if this has affected units' ability to get National Lottery funding, which I understand has become an issue for Scouts. Kingbird 16:51, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

If a male is identified as a woman then they may take any role in the Girlguide organization, the assumption is TransWomenAreWomen.
