Consider Moving "Gerlach Hot Springs Park" to "Great Boiling Springs"?

edit

The term "Gerlach Hot Springs Park" not a common name for this location. "Gerlach Hot Springs Park" does not appear in GNIS. The name of the nearst springs in GNIS is Great Boiling Springs ("Great Boiling Springs". Geographic Names Information System. United States Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior. Retrieved 2013-05-19.) The GNIS citation for Great Boiling Springs is:

"Map of an Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1842 - Oregon and Northern California in the years 1843-44,' Baltimore, MD: no publication date, no scale given. Litho by E. Weber & Co. Prepared by Brevet Capt. J.C. Fremont of the Corps of Topographical Engineers under the control of Col. J.J. Abert, Chief of the Topographical Bureau."

An alternate name is "Gerlach Hot Springs," the GNIS citation is "Carlson, Helen S., 'Nevada Place Names, A Geographical Dictionary,' Reno, Nevada: University of Nevada Press, 1974, 282 pp. Reference work giving historical background on place names in Nevada. p119."

The GPS coordinates of the "Gerlach Hot Springs Park" are for a slightly different springs that is located to the east of the Great Boiling Springs. However, the springs to the east of Great Boiling Springs are unnamed.

Google finds no citations for "Gerlach Hot Springs Park" in books or Google scholar.

The location is on private land. At best, this would be a private park In the past, there was public use of this property, but that is not the case today, access is by permission only.

I've updated the Friends of the Black Rock wiki for Gerlach "Great Boiling" Springs at http://blackrockdesert.org/wiki/index.php?title=Gerlach_"Great_Boiling"_Springs with information about the name (the site is down right now, it should be back up shortly)

One issue is that "Gerlach Hot Springs Park" is showing up on Google Maps, which is misleading to potential visitors. Can anyone provide a citation for "Gerlach Hot Springs Park?" If not, then perhaps this page should be moved.?

I propose moving the page to "Great Boiling Springs" Cxbrx (talk) 17:02, 19 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I found "Great Boiling Spring Park" in GNIS: ("Great Boiling Springs Park". Geographic Names Information System. United States Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior. Retrieved 2013-05-20.. The citation is: "U.S. Geological Survey. Geographic Names Phase I data compilation (1976-1981). 31-Dec-1981. Primarily from U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale topographic maps (or 1:25K, Puerto Rico 1:20K) and from U.S. Board on Geographic Names files. In some instances, from 1:62,500 scale or 1:250,000 scale maps." The Entry Date is 12-Dec-1980. However, only "Great Boiling Springs" appears on the 1990 Provisonal USGS Gerlach 1:24,000 at http://ia600200.us.archive.org/15/items/usgs_drg_nv_40119_f3/o40119f3.tif. However, "Great Boiling Springs Park" does appear on the 1964 Gerlach 1:24,000 map, see http://contentdm.library.unr.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/hmaps&CISOPTR=1747&CISOBOX=1&REC=1. I still believe that this page is misnamed and should be moved either to "Great Boiling Springs" or to "Great Boiling Springs Park (historical)" Cxbrx (talk) 04:27, 21 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I completed the move. Cxbrx (talk) 17:28, 2 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

GNIS was updated at some point to be historical: ("Great Boiling Spring Park (historical)". Geographic Names Information System. United States Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior. Retrieved 2014-09-25.. GNIS says "history: A former community park located at the Great Boiling Springs. The park was active in the 1960s and 1970s and was depicted on the 1964 USGS topo map, but the land is now privately owned and not accessible to the general public." I've asked Google Maps to update their entry. Cxbrx (talk) 04:54, 26 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
