Appears to be a pseudonym. What was his real name? Needs to make clearer in intro that he held no military rank. RJFJR 16:45, 26 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I attempted an overhaul. I'd like to think that it's worth an article but I just don't really know enough to do it myself. Swegner 00:46, 27 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Rename? edit

I suggest renaming to General Hershey Bar. A search shows only 68,800 results for Hersheybar and 3,380,000 for Hershey Bar. I found mention of his real name as William Matons.Kember (talk) 22:05, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

yes, i think it should be changed, but based on the pics i took of him and posted to commons, and linked here, it should be "General Hershy Bar". check the pics out his name tag is JUST readable and the newspaper headlines also have this spelling. my source is [1] for the name tag and the headline in <ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:General_Hershy_Bar_on_Hollywood_Boulevard,_Hollywood_CA_1979-81.jpg/ref> GreenC bot (talk) 00:19, 30 January 2019 (UTC) messed up forgot to sign diatom.phageReply

  • one more thing on name. i see the cartoon http://www.berkeleycitizen.org/Dunphy/peacenut6.htm as showing Hershey Bar. Maybe by the late 70s-80s when those pics were taken he had been warned off using the hershey bar name. (the pics i mention were taken in about 1980 ones on his page i mean). The evidence above about there being more hits for hershey bar than hersheybar i think is slightly clouded by the preponderance of the cited 3.38 million hit for hershey bar likely involving the hershey brand candy bar. Based on what I seen here, I'd say he started General Hershey Bar, and moved to General Hershy Bar later. The 1967 cartoon by his own publishing concern and the ~1980 photos would support that theory at least. So not sure or not if my newbie attempt to 'clean this up' was 100% correct. Have to study the history of this type of thing on the wikipedia. GreenC bot (talk) 00:19, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

information found on web supporting birth death dates edit

https://theotherbrother.wordpress.com/2008/04/17/general-hershey-bar/

this guy John Cavello write on the General around the web. He has written me when i posted pics of him. He is likely one of the few sources on this man. GreenC bot (talk) 00:19, 30 January 2019 (UTC) messed up forgot to sign diatom.phageReply

__________

John Cavello says: July 19, 2008 at 2:56 am Hi,

General Hershey Bar’s adapted performer name was Calypso Joe. It was a name he created when he was a Calypso dancer in the 40’s and 50’s. His true-to-life real name (given at birth) was William Matons (something that most of those closest to him didn’t even know).

If the good General was still alive, he’d be dancing with the ripe old age of 102 (come September, 2008). Sadly, he passed away on October 13, 1993. He was a wonderful mentor and his image and character will live on for generations to come.

I salute the General with highest prestige and I know he salutes us all back from that wonderful land of street theatre up in the sky.

Carry on General! GreenC bot (talk) 00:19, 30 January 2019 (UTC) messed up forgot to sign diatom.phageReply

information of general hershy bar needed for early 60s>70s edit

Found some stuff on the 40-50s, but not sure how he went from Calypso dancing in Las Vegas, to Hollywood anti-war hippie street theater over that period. That transition would be interesting to capture, maybe impossible.

Photos of Bill Matons edit

we don't have ANY pics of the mr. matons during his dance period. it would be nice to have.

ran the bot that tests for copyright violation on this page to learn about it, editing, and for fun edit

results came back positive, erghh rather, negative. it is not a copy right violation.

"General Hershy Bar, as of 19:03, 2 February 2016 (UTC), did not appear to be a copyright violation."
