POV

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but "splendid performance" and "outstanding actor of our time" sounds awfully POV. He's good. --Feitclub 19:39, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)

The link in Filmography to "Narrow Margin" that was released in 1990, incorrectly links to another movie called "The Narrow Margin" wich was released in 1952. Hackman didn't even play in the 1952 movie.

"Award-winning" as peacock term

There's an editor whose determination to correct the wrongs of WP:PEACOCK should be commended. There are, however, potential peacock phrases such as "award-winning" that are okay to use when the phrase is a) accurate and b) followed by the information regarding which award(s) won. The guideline for PEACOCK asks the editor to use common sense; I would like to point out that common sense is what helps the editor to differentiate between a renowned Academy Award winning actor such as Gene Hackman and a local or regional actor who is fluffing their resume by saying "award-winning" when the award is from, say, the local Rotarians. Which University of Illinois branch?

One paragraph says that he studied journalism at the University of Illinois. The next paragraph says that Gene Hackman told Larry King that he never studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has not even ever set foot there. English heritage

Why do so many Wikipedians hate to see anything other than "Irish" in a person's ethnicity? There are literally thousands of entries categorised as Irish, most with no proof and relating to a relative going back generations. But when it comes to, say, English, Wikipedians insist that is too far back to be notable unless one or more parent was born in the country. Hackman has 25% English blood. That is more notable than having an Irish antecedant 200 years ago. Too much xenophobia and racism here. 195.92.40.49 17:49, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Readded after it was deleted. Those with some intelligence and a minimum amount of nationalistic obsession acknowledge that ethnicity is probably notable only when going back one or two generations. If one or more parent or grandparent is of a different race or nationality then that has some bearing on the individual. Half of the several thousand "Irish Americans" on this site rely on an antecedant going back three to ten generations and ignore any other race or nationality in their heritage. The fact about living with his grandmother has been there donkey's years. We add that she is English and all of a sudden it must be deleted. why not add a {{Fact}} tag like most other unsourced claims on this site including the several thousand claims of "Irish"!! Well, Hackman(n) is either German or German-Jewish. I'd normally say it's German, but his father's name was Ezra, which is Hebrew. Gene Hackman is not Jewish. The surname "Hackman", in this case, is (non-Jewish) German, and Gene's great-grandfather was from a Pennsylvania Dutch background. As for the name "Ezra", it was used by non-Jews also. Gene Hackman's great-grandfather was named Ezra Hackman, and I would guess that's where his father received his own middle name from. There's another incorrect link: under "Other Work and Retirement", Mr. Hackman is listed as being the author of "Justice for None". The link redirects to "All Saints (Season 11)". This seems to be incorrect on a larger level, as entering the same title in the search field also links to "All Saints (Season 11)". Retired in lead

There seems to be an concerted effort to put Hackman's retirement in the lead paragraph. My opinion is that this seems presumptive and incorrect -- and not how other actors who are not active are classified. So I've reverted these edits.
