• I'm a little confused by his honorary ranks; are these like temporary or brevet ranks where he wears the rank and has the authority, but only draws the pay of his permanent rank? Is this an Australian thing? Because the Brits don't use that terminology, AFAIK.
  • I'm yet to see any major source on RAAF history describe precisely what honorary rank meant, and what I've discerned from my research suggests its use changed over time. Before WWII, lots of serving officers seemed to hold honorary ranks higher than their substantive rank, even in the Permanent Air Force. During WWII, this practice appears to have largely ceased for serving officers, and temporary or acting ranks became the norm. Otherwise, it appears that honorary ranks were generally granted to officers on, or some time after, their retirement. In any case, for Malley I believe his honorary ranks had the authority of the substantive equivalent, but not the pay, however I couldn't source that for you. I'd be surprised if our armed services didn't take the concept from the Brits, since we seem to have inherited most everything else from them militarily... ;-)
• So did he stay in the Citizen Air Force for the bulk of the interwar period? It appears so, but it's a little hard to tell since he doesn't seem to have any flying time with the CAF after 1929.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 07:21, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
  • My apologies, I left out the important point that he transferred to the RAAF Reserve in 1930 -- the Citizen Air Force, though only part-time, was 'active', i.e. for qualified pilots it involved regular flying, something they could not expect as Air Force Reservists.
