June 18 or June 19 ??

For some reason, the article says in several places that his birthday is June 18th. However, the June 19 comic in the official site's Vault looks like the true first, and trying to go to "Prev" comics does nothing. Anybody??? "Happy Birthday Garfield" was a documentary special aired on CBS on May 17, 1988. It was hosted by Jim Davis and featured a behind the scenes look in his studio as animators showed how the strip and animated specials were made. I read an article in The Onion that of course itself was a parody (like everything in The Onion) about Garfield written from an Onion reporter who has stumbled upon this unknown secret gem (Garfield) and tells people they should discover it, too. Anyway, she says how Garfield likes lasagna and his bed *IS* a lasagna pan. All of sudden, something clicks in my mind and it makes *total* sense to me! Cleanup

This article could stand some cleanup: the themes and settings section could use some copyediting (reliable references and such) so it doesn't violate Wikipedia's no original research policy, the criticism section could probably be moved into a larger section dealing with the influence/impact of the strip, and the article on whole definitely needs more references (preferably of the print variety.) Since there are other articles on comic strips that are featured (Krazy Kat, Calvin and Hobbes), they can be used as a model for this article.

I'd say that all of the references to individual strips should be removed as well. For the most part, they are unnecessary, and there are way too many. Seriously, do we need a quote at the end of almost every sentence? Player 03 (talk) 18:23, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

I'll do what I can, but if you're interested, Google News is a good place to start looking for references (be aware that some of the sites require a fee to view the articles); also, if you have books on the subject (not just the comics themselves, but books that touch on the history, production, etc.—Garfield: 20 Years and Still Kicking is an example), that would be helpful.

Problems

There are print versions of the strips, so they could probably be used as references. I wouldn't know the proper method of citing them though unless they were from a newspaper or treasury/collection book or something like that. Ink Runner (talk) 20:20, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

New series?

"A second series will premiere on Cartoon Network in 2009. The series will be based on the CGI direct-to-DVD movies." I'd like to ask for a source for this statement. June 19, 1978

I am having trouble reconciling June 19, 1978 with my memory. I started a job in Salt Lake City in January 1978. While I was in SLC, one of the papers (I subscribed to both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News) started running Garfield. I clipped a Garfield cartoon and put it on the bulletin board at work, which I titled "reaching your goals". I was already a Garfield fan, and I think I had been a fan for weeks. I left that job and SLC on July 5.

So this timing just feels too tight. I see that one of the references uses the June 19 date, but do we have a second source?  Randall Bart   Talk  20:37, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Never mind. I found at Garfield's web site the strip in question ran June 27. It was only the ninth strip run, and I was already a big fan. When I got back to Los Angeles, I showed my sister another Garfield strip I had clipped. She rolled her eyes and said "another cartoon cat", but I knew this cat was going places. TV specials, Lou Rawls

I have always felt that the writing of the TV specials was extremely good, and the animation of the Ghost pirates on the Halloween Special was incredible animation. I think the Specials need their own section, possibly their own page.

Nobody has mentioned that Lou Rawls was the singing voice of Garfield in the 1980's TV specials. He did an excellent job. I don't have time to do research on this, but it is mentioned in the Lou Rawls article here on wiki. Suspect History section

The history section looks strange, borderline vandalism. Lots of out of place formatting issues, and references that point to random pages from reputable sources that are unrelated to the statement with the annotation. Criticism section

I've removed it wholesale. Basically, these are all humor websites or self-published sources, which should not be used. None of the listed (smoking, xkcd, Maddox, or even this YouTube video) are experts in the field of comic books. Use of Maddox as a source for other things (Loose Change, Elizabeth Smart, Aaron Ralston) has also been removed from those pages. Importance

I think that Garfield should not be only mid importance in the assessment. The strip has had a powerful influence on the comic community, and is still incredibly popular to this day. If Calvin and Hobbes is considered Top importance, shouldn't this be considered top, or at least high. Coby (talk) 04:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

I have an image here showing the main cast of Garfield (Garfield, Jon, Liz, Odie, Arlene, Nermal, and Pooky). I made it myself by taking bits of different strips and editing the photos togesther as one. May I upload it? Missing Odie Citation

The PC here is throwing up javascript and login errors (IE 7...) I am unable to get the citation feature to work, but in the Odie section there is a missing citation re: Odie's tongue being pulled out. The strip being referred to is June 17, 1990

Heathcliff?

Heathcliff came years before Garfield and looks exactly like him. Why is there no mention of the obvious rip off, (or influence at best) from this original strip? Political?

It seems like stretching it to say that the earliest strips contained "moderately conservative" commentary based on one strip making a snarky remark about inflation. Yes, this is political commentary, but conservative? Just because it was poking fun at the Carter Administration? Yes, that whole section is rife with speculation sourced only to individual strips. It needs more secondary sources. The site has already been warned twice for breeching fair use policy by adding actual garfield cartoon strips which will certainly be copyright protected. Despite this there are still cartoon stips on the site.

Removing some images and attempting to simply describe the cartoon strip does not give the site a quality feel.

Far too many references are simply from the official garfield website or to garfield cartoon strips.

If a direct quote from the cartoonist is to be used then an acknowledgment of it's source need to be given.

The article is overlong for the information it provides .
