The original(indigenous) ethnic groups of Gamo Gofa are Gamo, Gofa, Zeysie, Oyda and Gidicho. Gamo Peoples with more than fifty dereta(traditional kinships or also synonym with "countries" in english) but now re-organized into weredawoch(districts) take the lionshare of the population number with over 1.3 whereas Gofa is the second major with over 500,000 population. Arba Minch Zuria, Dita, Dara Malo, Mirab Abaya, Boreda, Kemba, Kutcha, Chencha and Bonke woredawoch(districts) are the districts under administration of Gamo Area.
Bonke district inhabitants claimed to establish two districts such as Halila district and Tampi District but the government has denied them. Chencha district also claimed to be two districts such as Chencha and Ezo districts but the government has also denied them. The same denial followed the Garda District inhabitants that claim to establish separate district from the mother Kemba district. Furthermore, Alpha district inhabitants of Gamo peoples requested government to establish their own district in the Zone but the regional government discouraged them, too. Consequently, the rights of self-determination of Gamo peoples are under threat by the government and now at alarming situation. This has intensified animosity between the Gamo people and the government. The same is true with regard to Gofa people who clamied to establish their own Zone but discouraged by the government.
Politicians fear that the rough approach of the government and its ignorance to respect the civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights of the Gamo Gofa people, its attemt to assimilate these people with Welayta peoples and exploitation of natural resources and undermining the Gamo Gofa area may be cause for secession of Gamo Gofa to be independent region from the current SNNPRS.
It is believed by the Gamo Gofa people that secession as regional state is the most important issue for their self-determined development and get out of mariginalization and violation of their rights.

Gamo Gofa Zone edit

As of 2022 it seems that Gamo and Gofa form a region together. So I will rename this page.
