Please discuss the changes edit

Why are these changes made all the time? Can we please discuss this? I have very specific reasons for this article and it can't be changed that easily. I.e. the name "free stationing" is referring to a paper from Trimble and Leica. So changing the name of the article is wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darwipli (talkcontribs) 01:43, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Darwipli: please read WP:OWN and WP:BOLD. As with regards to the article title "not matching to the German Wikipedia", feel free to rename it there; here, in the English Wikipedia, the relevant policy for disambiguation, WP:NCDAB, reads:
For disambiguating specific topic pages by using an unambiguous article title, several options are available:
  1. Natural disambiguation. When there is another term (such as Apartment instead of Flat) or more complete name (such as English language instead of English) that is unambiguous, commonly used in English (even without being the most common term), and equally clear, that term is typically the best to use.
  2. Parenthetical disambiguation. A disambiguating word or phrase can be added in parentheses. The word or phrase in parentheses should be:
So by the first option above, the article should be titled Free stationing (with no caps, see WP:NCCAPS). By the second option, it should be Resection (surveying), because surveying is the context. In the English Wikipedia, parenthetical disambiguation does not involve two synonyms, as in the current version. Finally, why did you revert the lead first sentence improvement [1]? We should follow WP:LEADSENTENCE. Would please self-revert. fgnievinski (talk) 14:34, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the reply. Now we clean up some other articles as well. Please look at Resection. And also this article: Position resection and this article as well: Snellius–Pothenot problem.
I did propose to rename the article Snellius–Pothenot problem to Resection (triangulation) and merge the article Position resection to this renamed article Resection (triangulation).
I personoly would prefer to name this article here Free Stationing. My question would be, how user would find this article. English literature is referring to Resection (triangulation). I could not find a an English book, which would even say anything about Free Stationing. Only in papers of manufactures like Trimble and Leica it is referred to Free Stationing.
Now matching this with the German Wikipedia. Technically it should match like this:
Resection (triangulation) = de:Rückwärtsschnitt
Free Stationing = de:Freie Standpunktwahl
But I found plenty of German literature writing about de:Freie Standpunktwahl. So users would search for it. And because I couldn't find it in English literature, I named this article Resection (Free Stationing).
What shall we do? Darwipli (talk) 21:46, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
A quick search on books.google.com reveals plenty of books on surveying mentioning "free stationing", e.g.,
  • Linear Algebra, Geodesy, and GPS by Gilbert Strang, Kai Borre [2]
  • Surveying for Engineers by J. Uren, W.F. Price [3]
  • Surveying by Heribert Kahmen, Wolfgang Faig [4]
So de:Freie Standpunktwahl = Free stationing (with no title capitalization, see WP:NCCAPS). I'll take the liberty of renaming the article accordingly and also reverting the lead rewrite. As for the other articles, I'll discuss in the respective talk pages. fgnievinski (talk) 03:41, 1 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Globalize tag edit

Came across this article and it is heavily centralised on Germany for some reason:

- References to DIN

- "e.g. in German: Freie Standpunktwahl"

- Almost all references are from German sources and not able to be scrutinised in English.

- I've not heard anyone in surveying refer to this topic as "free stationing" and not "resection" Edmanning555 (talk) 11:20, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Please search Google books: surveying free stationing for a list of english written books, using the term Free Stationing. Darwipli (talk) 01:30, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
And also have a look at Position resection and intersection in surveying And as a Surveyor, I have written this article. And at minimum, this article is a translation of the german page. The main issue is the different calculation methods for the position of the instrumen. Darwipli (talk) 01:42, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
