Page name and move

This page should probably be at FreeBSD jail, since it isn't being used a proper noun anywhere but the title. Unfortunately, it requires an admin to move since some anon created an article at that link... --Gwern (contribs) 03:33, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

DragonFlyBSD also supports the Jails. And the DragonFly jail is yet better as the FreeBSD implementation. Why is this not mentioned in the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.179.187.147 (talk) 18:58, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Other OSes with this feature?

Besides a *BSD variant or two, I haven't seen this feature in other *NIXes. Anyone have an idea how one could do this in Linux or Mac OS X? I think it'd be neat to allow an app (e.g. a webserver) to jail itself for added security.Twir (talk) 16:50, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Solaris Zones are a similar concept, and I think Solaris Containers as well. Stuff like OpenVZ, Virtuozzo Containers, and Sandboxie are also similar. 184.65.77.230 (talk) 22:48, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

• Please note that the FreeBSD and jails discussed here are not paid products of any company or individual. But are opensource free software and done on a volunteer basis. Therefor the promotion of such is a mute point. It may even urge others to add the functionality to their own flavor of *nixes.

    • An enthusiastic page with legitimate content is better than no page at all. This kind of esoteric technology rarely generates enough job listings to cultivate an authoritative voice bereft of enthusiasm. If there were more to promote, the problem would solve itself. Constricted or verboten?

Additionally, interaction between processes that are not running in the same jail is restricted.

Restricted

• Kept within certain limits; limited: on a restricted diet.
• Excluding or unavailable to certain groups: a restricted area.
• Of, relating to, or being information available only to authorized persons.

They can still communicate over TCP and over socket files (if their file systems overlap). Shared memory is also not separated (and thus disabled by default for security reasons). 184.65.77.230 (talk) 22:41, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
