FA push

Few notes:

  • The gameplay section is way too long. It probably needs to either be trimmed by 1/3, or moved to a subarticle and summarized in a few paras. The problem is that we don't want to continue this process with a lot of the other Final Fantasies, which cover enough gameplay info on the article already. FFIX is clearly all gameplay, and we already have a class list, so it's a reasonable move.
  • Everything else is pretty minor. I'd say if we can get the gameplay issue settled, then we'd already have more than half the battle. — Deckiller 06:19, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

German and French

As of March 2007, the game is also available with French and German text. Take a look at the European PlayOnline site. --84.184.97.146 12:41, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Premiere sites and FFXIclopedia

Putting the link to FFXIClopedia is within the context of this, it should not be mutually exclusive. I think that the list should include notable sites (like all the premiere sites) and maybe some larger fansites such as, say, Limit Break Radio. I call your attention to the World of Warcraft page, paticularly it's external links section. This includes WoWWiki, The IGN WoW site and even Allakhazam. Now, I don't mean to compare the two games, but to have different rules for two different MMOs is absolutely rediculus. What I think needs to happen is something to the effect of:

==External links==

  • Premier Sites - Official list of informative fansites associated with Final Fantasy XI, selected by SquareEnix.

If there are no objections or problems, I shall implement this list. If you have any, say so. Finaly, Ganiman (I know that's you), get a Wikipedia account and make your voice heard! If you want to complain, let us hear it! --Zero Serenity 13:57, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Ganiman already has an account and his voice has been heard a long time ago, believe me. I am not familiar in handling the case of MMORPG ELs, so anyone else have comments feel free to do so. — Bluerです。 なにか? 14:16, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
You were saying? --Zero Serenity 14:36, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
Precisely. There has been an argument before, which I was not aware of at the time I was vouching about ELs. I'm not an above-policy editor, if I may add, I only did what I understood of the policy, but that was his judgment; he may go with his, but I know what I am. As for the ELs, I have no comment. — Bluerです。 なにか? 14:52, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
I think FFXIclopedia and others fall under category 4 of "What should be linked." --Zero Serenity 14:56, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
  • Too many external links. Stick to four: official site, fansite list, Final Fantasy XI on FFWikia, and FFXIencyclopedia. — Deckiller 20:42, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
    • I don't agree here. This is actualy a small number of links in comparison to other pages. I would say 10 should be the absolute limit here (we're at 9). I should give a rather small reminder that this really isn't the same sort of Final Fantasy game as the rest. So having a few more links than normal wouldn't kill us. --Zero Serenity 21:42, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
    • I wish to formally object to the inclusion of Allakhazam on this list for the reason they are owned by the same company that owns IGE, RPG Holdings LLC (This was outright admitted by Alla himself in a post on his forum soon after the deal went down, if it is requested I can dig up links to the relevant posts). To add to that it is well-known throughout the FFXI community that most of the "information" contained on that website is either wrong, incomplete, or misleading. ---- Toksyuryel talk | contrib 21:42, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
    • Objection noted. If this is shared between more than just Toksyuryel and myself, I will go ahead and remove it. --Zero Serenity 21:45, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Wait, wait. What's the point of listing all these fansites when they are all already listed in the second link, Premier Sites? I mean, it's not even a problem of relevancy or not, it's just simply redundant. These fansites are all already listed in the second link. Kariteh 21:48, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
I was probably writing that a bit too fast and messed up such redundancy. --Zero Serenity 22:04, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

What's the consensus? — Bluerで す。 14:43, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

For anyone who might not be aware, the discussion has continued on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Final Fantasy#A small request for the lists. Kariteh 07:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

And it will come back here. Grouping this game under Final Fantasy games is correct, but it takes a completely different format than a standard game which is completely offline, hence why the External Links section is longer. There was no real reason that they were removed anyway. As a three year veteran of the game, I know what's going on in it. --Zero Serenity 04:10, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Just addressing my concerns:
  • So the external links should be allowed because another article also has an expanded EL section?
  • The two webcast pages can help an uninitiated reader (one who doesn't play the game, but wishes to know something about the game) how?
  • Dreams in Vana'diel looks more like a discussion forum or message board, that's a normally avoided link, isn't it?
  • Another thing I see from the links above is that they contain essentially the same thing: official game news, game database and information, and again, forums and message boards. That's a bit redundant, isn't it? — Blue 09:01, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Adressing your concerns.
  • In a sense yes. That's how a lot of Wikipedia entries end up. People just end up borrowing or stealing from other articles if they have a good idea going.
  • The casts do help new players. I've seen/heard stories of people who have never touched the game, listened to the cast, picked it up and went with it.
  • Probably true. I've been around it a bit but never really used the database information from it.
  • Yes it may seem that way, but sometimes a multi-pronged perspective is good for the community. I mean, if it was just me, the two sites I used the most would be the only ones on that link plus the official sites. But no, I decided that having more than just a couple viewpoints might help someone reading the article. Granted, they are mostly database information heavy, but if you really want to know, it's best to dive into it, right? --Zero Serenity 02:35, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Very well. Dreams in Vanadiel and Final Fantasy Stratics are more or less discussion forums. These will be removed. And the podcast links, the reason above suggests the use of advertising, but I'm still checking. And the redundancy of the premier sites are still being questioned; there are more premier sites in the official website than listed here (sort of a bias, wouldn't you think so?), it's either listing all of them; which will go against the EL policy of a link repository, or not listing them at all (which will answer the redundancy issue). Views? — Blue 13:29, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I may be late to the discussion, but wasn't this all decided back in May? Why is this being brought up again? The consensus there was fourfold:

Proposal

Now then, here's a proposed guideline of ELs in WP:FF for your consideration:

  1. Official websites per WP:EL 3.1(1) - the media's website, if not the organization's website,
  2. Open wikis that follow WP:EL 4.0(12) - key words are: 1.stable and 2.active
  3. Official resources following WP:EL 3.1(3) - related to the organization responsible for the media.
  4. In addition, it was agreed that websites that demonstrate a comprehensiveness of the subject, would also be included.

Warcry and Stratics fail in all four aspects. They are woefully out of date, do not keep their sites updated except for reprinting official announcements from the official page, and many people across the major sites remain puzzled at how they maintain their premier status. As for the podcasts, I don't see how any of them meet any of the criteria previously agreed to, however, having not ever listened to them, I can't address how comprehensive they are. If it can be proved that they demonstrate a comprehensiveness of the subject, I can see them remaining.

However, as much as it pains me to say it, Allakhazam does meet the criteria, as does, obviously, FFXIclopedia, the largest and most popular website related to Final Fantasy XI. In addition, there is an official webcomic, whose web address I cannot remember, but we may want to include it as it meets point 3. Just my 2 cents. --Rolks 22:08, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

The key issue here is that Wikipedia is not a repository of links. To just sit and list every link related to the game is pointless. Might as well spit out a Google search. The ELs should be restricted to quality sites that meet the four criteria. Not all the "Premier Sites" meet that criteria. They may have when they were first chosen to be Premier Sites 4 years ago, but do not anymore. So merely linking to the Premier Sites is not sufficient. In addition, just including them here is not sufficient as I've noted above about Warcry and Stratics.
The fact that this is MMORPG or the fact that another MMORPG on this site has done their ELs one way, does not mean such faults should be repeated here. The FF Project made a determination about how ELs would be selected for FF Project articles, which Final Fantasy XI is one, regardless of its status as an MMORPG. Some of those currently links listed do not fit the criteria and should be removed.
Unless an EL meets one of the four criteria above, as taken from the FF Project discussion, they should be deleted. This includes the Podcasts, regardless of how "useful" a beginner may find them. --Rolks 22:34, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and the webcomic is Adventure Log. It's a subpage of the Virtual Cats webcomic. --Rolks 22:36, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
We can include the podcast link IF it can be proven to have helped players AND non-players alike and follows point 3. Until then, we remove them. We only include links if it conforms to Wikipedia's aim of becoming an encyclopedia. So far the FF WikiProject is one of the many Wikiprojects that has set the standard; it follows policies and criteria even though the subject it deals most is fiction. And that's what the FFWikiproject strives to maintain. — Blue 17:42, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I can tell you that the podcasts do not meet point 3. Their only hope is point 4. --Rolks 20:08, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Also, here is the link to Adventure Log, the official webcomic for Final Fantasy XI. I don't know if you want to include it. --Rolks 20:15, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Comprehensiveness have been added to the open wiki criteria, since it would be redundant to add it to official sources. And as for the Adventure Log, maybe not; it doesn't provide adequate enough resource to make an encyclopedic article. — Blue 21:07, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I've added Adventure Log to the merchandise section along with the other novels and mangas. Mmh, it's not something physical and for sale but it's something that was created to promote the game, so it does fit in this section, doesn't it? Kariteh 21:22, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I think not. This may be arguing on semantics, but Merchandise is something bought and sold. IMHO the webcomic is fitting as a promotional tool, unless it was supposed to be bought by consumers. — Blue 21:32, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I've changed the title of the section to "Merchandise and promotion" then. If the two paragraphs were bigger or get bigger, we could separate them and have two sections, "Merchandise" and "Related media" (like in the FFVII article), but I think it's fine for now. Kariteh 22:22, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Cut locations section, combine job system and leveling system

I think we could probably do with removing the locations segment, and putting Signet information elsewhere. Also, the job and leveling system sections could be consolidated, since the mechanics of raising a job are identical to that of leveling. Achilles2.0 03:19, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Controversy section

Hello, this article once included a section about in-game controversies such as RMTing and the effect of gilsellers (Real-money trading) on the FFXI economy. I would just like to know why it has seemingly been removed entirely? Rdysn5 00:29, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Going back over some talk page archives, it was removed because it could not be made to fit with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. The section as it was read as an anti-gilseller rant and was more editorial than factual. We couldn't find a way to rewrite it neutrally, so we removed it entirely. -RaCha'ar 01:30, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
But that seems pro-gilselling. --MahaPanta (talk) 08:56, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
What we mean is, if you can find magazine(s) or other third parties that complain about it, we can use that as reference and make it about a critical opinion of the game.—Loveはドコ? (talkcontribs) 09:12, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

It's removed because it is unsourced. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable. Please find and include a citation there; statement from the developers are most helpful in this situation. And 75.59-, please sign your posts & start new topics at the bottom. — Bluerで す。 05:55, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Plot Summary

Hey, you know every other final fantasy article has some kind of plot summary, would it hurt to add one here?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.241.120.198 (talkcontribs) 05:15, 18 June 2007

Of course not! If you want to, you are welcomed to write a concise, well-referenced and neutral plot summary. — Bluerで す。 12:14, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
However, I would find this grossly difficult. A plot summary of all eight or so plots in the game might be best split then added as links. --Zero Serenity 17:16, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Links to the expansion article? Good idea. I agree with it being a bit more difficult since this is an online game with expansions that add up further to the story. Ideas? — Bluerで す。 14:43, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure if there should be a separate article for the story, especially since a gameplay subarticle is already pushing it. — Deckiller 16:46, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I propose general theme of the storylines here, background info and history of Vana'diel in Vana'diel, and precise story arcs in Final Fantasy XI expansions. Kariteh 11:13, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. — Deckiller 15:22, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I want try to add a story area. In which we discuss the background story of the game, at least in a very basic structure. We could try to break it up into sections for example a section for each of the nations explaining their history and how they contribute to the overall story. Maybe another section for each of the expansions. If anyone wants to help me out let me know. Ryulen1325 18:22, 15 January 2008

FA push

For the FA push:

  • Lead should be 3 paragraphs.
  • Gameplay should be split (and combined with the class list) to make a Final Fantasy XI gameplay subarticle, with a gameplay section roughly a third of the current size here as an overview.
  • References throughout the in-universe sections
  • Trim the setting section a bit and add creation info
  • Merge the character list into a little section here under setting
  • Copy-edit and trim

Deckiller 15:22, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

That sounds like a great idea. We are almost done with the FAC of FFIX too. Um, Tyler, what exactly do you want me to do? I've always wanted to be the main pusher of FAs and I am currently the main pusher on Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi with The Filmaker and the FAC talk is at Talk:Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi#FAC. Greg Jones II 21:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
You can take a break if you want, of course. This one's already fairly close. The gameplay section really needs a big trim and references need to be added. That's really the only section requiring more than an hour of work. — Deckiller 00:01, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply, but most of it looks good, dont you think, Tyler? Greg Jones II 18:35, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

References

On to more technical stuff. The References section has some broken links, improper formatting and inexistent references. Present examples are Ref 3,8, 9, 10, 46, 47, 48, 49. — Blue 21:36, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

All addressed. — Blue 02:15, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Reception section.

This section truly needs to be put in chronological order as it jumps around too much; Further, it should be mentioned that even today FF-XI still enjoys a large dedicated subscriber base. [1] The reception piece makes it sound as if the game basically wound down after 2005, which I think is a bit biased. Martinj63 23:41, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

On the system requirements

Can FFXI really run on Windows 98? See the link: http://www.finalfantasyxionline.com/content/finalfantasyxi-requirements.php Hellcat fighter 10:43, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Highly doubtful, and if it does, it isn't officially supported (see playonline), so it shouldn't be included, in the same way that WINE games aren't listed at linux compatible -lucid 20:10, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Looking at the system requirements listed on the Chains of Promathia expansion, Windows 98, 98 SE, and ME are listed as being supported (along with 2000 and XP, with XP being recommended). With the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion, 98 and ME are no longer listed; Vana'diel Collection 2007 doesn't list them, either. This is probably likely due to ToAU and VC2007 both being released on DVD-ROM instead of CDs and some/most 98 and ME systems don't have DVD-ROM drives. Another possibility is that since Microsoft no longer supports 98 and ME, SquareEnix doesn't see a need to, either. Of course, if there are people out there that are running the game and all the expansions on 98, more power to them. I'd say just leave the requirements as 2000 and XP since that's what the latest boxes have on them. -Krellion 02:13, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Windows 98 Was "Supported" up until Microsoft dropped support for Windows 98. A few months later SE dropped "Support" for 98 users but the game still works on that OS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.154.161.50 (talk) 14:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Are the expansion packs a requirement?

Must a PC user have the latest expansion pack (along with all earlier expansion packs) to play FF XI? If a PC gamer had the first two expansion packs only, would FF XI still be playable online? Or would he/she be unable to access certain parts of the game, or worse - be unable to play FF XI at all? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hellcat fighter (talkcontribs) 11:52, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

They are not required to play the game, but the player would not have access to the locations, quests, missions, jobs, etc., that those expansions give, like all of the Near East items in the Treasures of Aht Urghan expansion. I believe a message will be given to the player about not having the proper expansion installed if they attempt to go to one of the expansion's zones. The problem isn't limited to the PC version, either: PS2 users can come across it as well. The Xbox 360 version had all of the expansions included when it was released and doesn't have the problem (at least until Wings of the Goddess is released). -Krellion 17:23, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I believe that if a player who doesn't have the proper expansion pack visits a zone line, nothing will happen. The player will hit the invisible zone boundary and stop. There have always been a few areas within the game that were basically "blank" zone lines. For instance, the caves in the North Gustaberg zone that lead from that zone to Movalpolis existed back when the game went live, and their back end was basically a black "hole" in the back of the cave. It wasn't until Chains of Promathea was released that the zone line was in place (though the appearence of the back of the cave hasn't changed). However, for most of the expansion regions this isn't an issue. The majority of the content (including all of the content for the third and fourth expansions) requires interacting with either a person or an object in order to enter one of the new zones, and if you don't have the required expansion then you'll simply receive a "nothing out of the ordinary" message. For instance, accessing the new zones in Wings of the Goddess requires a player to use one of the "Gaping Maw" items scattered around the world. If a player doesn't have the expansion, then they'll receive a message that the maws don't do anything. Most of the new zones in the first two expansions fit this pattern as well, although there are some that only require crossing a simple zone line. --Junior612 (talk) 22:43, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Platforms

The PS3 (With firmare 1.31 or later) can now install and play Final Fantasy XI if you use the PS2 Software. As a result shouldn't it be listed in the Platform section of the wiki? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.154.161.50 (talk) 14:29, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Voiced tracks

I don't seem to recall Memory de la Stona being voiced, and technically the gospel one isn't used in game, I believe. - Penwhale | Blast him / Follow his steps 04:57, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

I've never heard the soundtrack of the original game, but Chudah's Corner has lyrics for Memoro de la Ŝtono. Kariteh 10:06, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Battle System

Is it right to say that FFXI's battle system is essentially turn based disguised in real time? Since turns are still occuring in the background. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.208.72.195 (talk) 09:59, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

yeah, FFXII was near identical, just visually different. It would be considered turn based since attacks are programmed and linear. (i.e. they don't have the freedom of an action andverture game's attacks.)Josiah (talk) 02:03, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Updated Image

I've updated the boxart since the new version including Wings of the Goddess came out last week. The only problem was I had file size errors uploading and had to use a second photo, so Wikibots have added both pics to a deletion watch list. Removing Updates Info

If everyone is interested making a FA push would removing the Updates section in its current form be a huge loss to the article? I see both positives and negatives to this. I feel that information such as June 12th update is trivial in the grand scheme of things. Also the first paragraph seems to contain 5 different updates in one group and then the rest of the section has all the rest of the updates listed individually.

However I see information such as the update on Dec. 2006 and feel that is worthy of being kept because it lets people know that FFXI can be played on a PS3 and rough idea of how its done.

Here is what I propose:

  • Removing most of the information from the updates section and work it into the rest of the article somewhere. (i.e. include the information about the P3 update in the section where it talks about platforms you can play it on)
  • Keep the updates section and include a line about Square Enix doing frequent updates to the game and then provide a link to Square Enix's update page. Wiresite (talk) 19:14, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Famitsu score

Starting discussion; something as trivial as this should not disrupt a FAC. (Guyinblack25 talk 15:20, 7 March 2008 (UTC))

I agree. We should settle this once and for all. The Prince (talk) 15:39, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, let's remove the false statement. FightingStreet (talk) 15:42, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
First off, explain the reason behind your decision. Why should it be removed, and why should it stay? (Guyinblack25 talk 15:43, 7 March 2008 (UTC))
The Next-Gen source claims that only seven games ever achieved a 40/40 Famitsu score, one of which being Final Fantasy XI. However, the source (which dates from 2008) fails to mention that Final Fantasy XII also got a 40/40, way back in 2006.[1] According to various sources, Final Fantasy XII was the 6th game ever to achieve that score; yet according to the Next-Gen source, Super Smash Bros Brawl is the 7th. So obviously there's something fishy here: no other source on the Internet mentions Final Fantasy XI receiving a 40/40 Famitsu score, except Next-Gen and a few fansites that link back to it. FightingStreet (talk) 15:53, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I've had a look at the cited reference and it points to a forum page information on SSB getting a supposed 40/40. The scores record on Famitsu only lists Final Fantasy XII as gaining 40/40. This information seems to be backed up by Famitsu Scores Archive. All in all, I'd sugest that the NextGen article is a typo and should actually reference FFXII. Gazimoff (talk) 16:32, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Update - As Famitsu don't have an archive of their scores or reviews online, plus I don't speak Japanese, the only source I can find with a review score is this forum. It's not a reliable source, but it says that the PS2 version was reviewed and scored 38. You may want to contact the person who compiled the information in the forum post (it's only a month old) and ask if he can provide you with anything firmer to cite. Gazimoff (talk) 17:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I removed the content, as it was clearly a typo by Next-Gen. The Prince (talk) 17:33, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Also removed from the high score table for now, as it's probably better to have no information instead of incorrect information.Gazimoff (talk) 17:45, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
FightingStreet, is this satisfactory for your stance at the FAC? (Guyinblack25 talk 17:48, 7 March 2008 (UTC))
I think the real Famitsu score should be found and added like in most (all?) other FA Japanese VG articles. FightingStreet (talk) 18:02, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Found these: Square Haven and some Japanese site. Are any of these considered reliable sources? FightingStreet (talk) 18:17, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Square Haven is technically a fan site, I try to avoid if I can. The other one seems alright though. It appears to be owned by a company and reports information from various other reliable Japanese gaming sites. Though I couldn't find anything to explicitly says who owns it. (Guyinblack25 talk 18:30, 7 March 2008 (UTC))
I'll put that one in if no one objects. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:16, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I think I missed something, b/c I completely missed the discussion about the merge of Vana'diel into FFXI article, and can't find any record or archive of such discussion on the Talk pages of this FFXI, Vana'diel, or the FAC record.--Hydrokinetics12 (talk) 18:13, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

That would be because we talked it out at the Final Fantasy Wikiproject, and I proposed that that sub articles, minus the music one, be merged into the main article as it is featured, and they are all of highly questionable notability on their own. Better to have 1 featured article that covers a topic well than 6 articles that are of questionable value. I added a job section, and also started a story and characters section, so an encyclopedically appropriate amount of plot and character information is available, and it would be ok to add a bit more if you are familiar with the story. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 19:58, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Reasonable, although I don't understand what distinguishes the worlds of FF 7 and 8, which are both featured only in their respective games and get their own articles, from the FFXI world which doesn't.--Hydrokinetics12 (talk) 00:52, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
True, but you'll see even there it differs; 7 has an article that may have GA potential, maybe not; 8 is a GA because it has a large amount of coverage, which seems to be the exception for video game worlds or locations, and XI has almost nothing on Vana'diel as a world or location. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 15:26, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
The FFVII article is very long and could perhaps have its Development section be split into a separate article (that's another debate...), but its Setting section doesn't seem to require a "World of" subarticle in my opinion. Gaia (Final Fantasy VII) has no reception section, and the only information in its Creation section is 1/ a minor explanation about the world's name and 2/ the FFX connection stuff. 1/ is already mentioned in the main FFVII article, and 2/ is mentioned in the Final Fantasy X article and could easily be mentioned in the FFVII article without requiring a whole subarticle. I think Gaia (Final Fantasy VII) should be redirected. The World of FFVIII article is definitely okay though, considering it has passed Good Article. FightingStreet (talk) 17:57, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

FFXI on PS3

When playing the PS2 bersion of FFXI on PS3, is the HDD required or can the data be installed on the console's built in HD? Also, is the 80GB console backwards compatible w/ FFXI? The article has little info on this, and the only mention of the problems on playing the game on PS3 are unsourced. --Hydrokinetics12 (talk) 22:23, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

FFXI is installed to the PS3's internal hard drive. You need to install the PS2 drive system (downloaded from the PlayStation Store) before doing this; it will set up a 10GB section on the PS3's drive that is viewable by PS2 software. As far as I know, all PS3s that are capable of running PS1 and PS2 software are able to run FFXI. Krellion (talk) 18:38, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

That is only true for the 60GB (no longer in circulation) and 80GB Systems, the 20, and 40GB Systems however do NOT support backwards compatability...75.172.186.108 (talk) 13:37, 3 September 2008 (UTC) Noaru

Cross-Server Item Delivery

"...more common is the creation of different characters on different servers who can send items between each other."

I'm not exactly sure what Kurosawa-san intended to say in the cited interview, but I can assure you that this statement is 100% false. Items cannot be sent between servers, neither can gil for that matter. The only way to move anything between servers is by moving a character through the World Transfer Service, in which case the characters items and gil would move with the character to the new server. The most obvious counter example to the statement above is that multiple characters with the same name can exist on separate servers (example; try to search for any popular anime character and you'll find dozens of examples.) If it were possible to send items across servers there would be name conflicts as a player simply gives the recipient character's name and not their server when having items delivered.

What Kurosawa-san probably meant is that it's common practice for players to create multiple characters on the same server but in different nations. doing this they could quickly check the various auction houses and send items without wasting time with travel. (Travel times can be upwards of 30 minutes depending on what routes are open to the player.) I wish I had a citation to back this up but unfortunately I don't, I just have many friends who do this themselves. --68.109.120.23 (talk) 20:16, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I believe he was referring to the practice of creating a character with which to server hop and move items between servers. It's expensive to do ($25 each time you hop) but for certain high-value items (large amounts of dynamis currency, kclubs, AV drops) some players are willing to do this. --98.203.233.109 (talk) 16:10, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Pandemonium Warden

Might be worth mentioning this, since it's been on Kotaku and X-Play and the like: http://petfoodalpha.com/?p=1055 --Tarage (talk) 02:13, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Disagree-- I believe it is too soon to add anything regarding the boss known as Pandemonium Warden. I think its still too earlier to put anything regarding 1 groups attempt. At this time not much else is known about PW. To put something on the page in the article would ruin the quality of the article when it ignores past attempts at other bosses. There have been attempts at another boss called Absolute Virtue that one linkshell took on for 26 hours straight, raining as much damage as possible before wiping. Too little is known at this time about the true intention by Square Enix for this fight. Wiresite (talk) 18:35, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Then how about a controversies section. I don't think we should simply ignore this, as it is making news around the world. --Tarage (talk) 21:56, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Not until there are reliable sources for it, we cant just add rumors to a featured article. Judgesurreal777 (talk) 22:21, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Even those articles are getting the story wrong. The articles are stating that people were getting sick DURING the fight when in reality a couple of them threw up because they were disgusted with what had just happened. They took the time doing all the 'mini' fights to gather the items needed to go fight PW. Then they spent 18 hours fighting the mob only to have it end in a failure. I'm currently at work but later tonight I will provide a link to the linkshell (aka guild) leader's LiveJournal postings about the incident. I still believe that because the story is being told incorrectly by the media that it shouldn't be listed in the main article. Wiresite (talk) 12:02, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

According to Square Enix the group that did this, fought the boss wrong. It was not Square Enix's intention to have battles this length. A quote from their site, "Together with Absolute Virtue, it has been deemed that the combative techniques for weakening these NMs are too difficult. As a result, some players have engaged these enemies using unanticipated methods which led to extended battle times." Also this news was first reported on a message board called Order of the Blue Gartr Linkshell (WARNING LINK CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE). Furthermore the leader of the linkshell (guild/group) put a post on his LiveJournal page which can be found here. With these pieces of information I have removed section regarding Pandemonium Warden because the news source quoted has gotten its own information wrong. Wiresite (talk) 01:45, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Installation

I believe it is importnat to state that the installation time, for me anyways, was around 10 Hours. (Not includeing what I did inbeen loading screens.)

Mentioning installation time is pretty useless, since it depends upon too many variables.
It depends upon the machine FFXI is being installed on, it depends upon which parts of FFXI are being installed (main game only, some of the expansion, all expansions), what version(s) one is installing from (all in one DVD edition, the editions with separate CDs), how old the edition one uses for installation is (new discs will result in shorter update time, very old discs will result in almost all game files being replaced via update).

EQUIPMENT

I WENT ON HERE TO LEARN ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT OF FINAL FANTASY XI AND HOW IT WORKS ANDOTHER AND ITS NOT HERE WHAT THE FUCK?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.186.103.25 (talk) 17:12, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

No need to swear, though I'm guessing you're just being a troll or vandal anyway and aren't expecting a proper response. :) If you truly want information on the equipment in FFXI, you may want to check out the FFXI wiki at FFXIclopedia.org. Krellion (talk) 15:26, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

How is this featured? How is this even GA-class?

As a long time player of FFXI (4+ years now), I have to say this article is simply atrocious. There are numerous mistakes littered throughout, bizarre choices about what to mention and how to mention it, etc. Too much to fix easily without a complete rewrite IMO. I would not recommend this article to anyone. Please reconsider the status of this article as it does not properly give meaningful insight into this game and serves only to spread confusion. --98.203.233.109 (talk) 15:56, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
