This whole article looks like it's been written and re-written too many times.

e.g. in just the 3 sentences " An extranet can be understood as an intranet mapped onto the public Internet or some other transmission system not accessible to the general public, but managed by more than one company's administrator(s). For example, military networks of different security levels may map onto a common military radio transmission system that never connects to the Internet. Any private network mapped onto a public one is a virtual private network (VPN), often using special security protocols.",

• the sentences barely relate; it's not a real paragraph
• "managed by more than one company's administrator(s)" isn't explained anywhere else in the article, and is wrong anyway
• "can be understood as" are weasel-words
• "military networks of different security levels may map onto a common military radio transmission system that never connects to the Internet" is nothing to do with the definition of extranet at the top of the article
• "Any private network mapped onto a public one is a virtual private network" conflicts with the definition of VPN on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network, and is wrong anyway
• "often using special security protocols" is wrong for both VPNs and extranets, because most of them are commercial using industry-standard security protocols. Like HTTPS, SSL, RSA, IPsec, etc.

Extranet vs secure website

An extranet, as the name implies, is foremost a 'network' facility and not just a website. Extranets may host many types of services like any network. Your term 'remote intranet' comes close in meaning, if you mean that it is an extension of an intranet into another remote network, via usually a public network. One scenario, for example, is when a company provides a network facility for a customer to access its locally hosted database in a LAN, which may be by many technologies, a VPN for example. The terms intranet and extranet both relate to a demarcation line of a private network boundary, implementing some kind of security feature, usually. Access to a resource within, is on the intranet, from outside it's on the extranet. Kbrose (talk) 18:07, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

A problematic sentence

Hello,

there is a sentence (a part of it) in the article that says "It has also been described as a "state of mind" in which the Internet is perceived as a way to do business with a selected set of other companies (business-to-business, B2B)"

Shouldn't here instead of the word "Internet" stand "Extranet" or something. To me personally the word "Internet" on this place doesn't fit!

I have removed that vague and unreferenced "state of mind" comment, and clarified the distinction between extranet and the rest of the internet. Still more work to do though Paul W (talk) 20:13, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
