Enlargement: Bangladesh edit

Bangladesh shouldn't be included in "Enlargement" because, as far as I can remember, the ASEAN Charter forbids any members from being accepted into the ASEAN organization who are not part of the geographical "South-East Asia" region, with the exception of Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste, who have been observers and bidding for full membership with a lot of support before the drafting and implementing of the said constitution.

Even if Bangladesh is granted observer status, they will remain as such, an observer. Observers without any chance of getting full membership can not be considered "Enlargement". They're more of a "special guest". Besides, Bangladesh is closer to South Asia than to ASEAN. --- Laibcoms (talk | Contribs) 14:45, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't see a problem with including potential observers in the enlargement article. See the criteria section which states that observer status "should be granted only to potential members of ASEAN who satisfy the criteria set for ASEAN membership". Also Southeast Asia states that Bangladash is sometimes considered to be a part of southeast asia. Where would you suggest this info be moved to? TDL (talk) 19:13, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agree with TDL. I'm sure ASEAN will be happy to play fast and loose with the definition of the "South-East Asia region" if they so desire, especially as there is no solid definition. CMD (talk) 19:33, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Timor-Leste edit

Is TL an observer or not? There is no clear link to a document that shows they are. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.244.74.200 (talk) 11:03, 25 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Palau edit

The following section was removed:

>>Palau is an island nation east of the Philippines which gained independence in 1994. It is sometimes included within the scope of Southeast Asia,[1] and its cultural and geographic proximity to ASEAN members suggest it as a possible expansion prospect.[2][citation needed] However, Palau's population of 22,000 would make it the smallest ASEAN member by far.

>>Its native language, Palauan is believed to be of the Sunda-Sulawesi branch of the Austronesian language family. The language is thus more closely related to Indonesian, Malay, and other languages of ASEAN than to the Oceanic languages of Micronesia and beyond.

>>Palau is closer to the Southeast Asian mainland than much of Indonesia.

>>In addition to the indigenous Palauan majority, at least 16% of the population is of Philippine origin (See Filipinos in Palau, Demographics of Palau).

Palau membership in ASEAN has been considered by Severino, and in various places on the internet. I leave this section here in the hopes that it can be used if and when there are more sources verifying interest in Palau as an expansion candidate.--Zekelayla (talk) 04:16, 15 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Zekelayla: There are now voices arguing for Palau to become an official observer in international media. Perhaps you should consider adding some of this content to the webpage? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.220.159.76 (talk) 23:43, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Map Inconsistencies edit

Why does the map caption on this webpage not mention Fiji? But, the map on the "Accession of Papua New Guinea to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations" page does? It looks like Fiji is shaded yellow on both maps. And why do the maps on both pages not mention Sri Lanka or Pakistan? If it is because they are not potential candidates, then shouldn't they be listed in other states?

Other Countries edit

Why are Australia and New Zealand listed in the same section. Shouldn't there be in separate sections? And why doesn't the section mention Taiwan. There is lots of discussion of Taiwan's interest in the literature on the topic.

Add Colombia or not? edit

See the Republican Watch, In November, POTUS Biden said the "Colombian Prime Minister", so are there any further informations on Colombian interests in joining ASEAN? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:40, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
