Correct numerical designation of the Earls of Sutherland

edit

Since almost the dawn of Wikipedia the Earl of Sutherland page has listed Elizabeth Sutherland, 10th Countess of Sutherland who was succeeded in the Earldom by her grandson John Gordon, 11th Earl of Sutherland, and I recently created the article for Elizabeth. However, according to 19th century historian William Fraser, who seems to be a well regarded authority on the subject, Elizabeth is not designated as the "10th" and her grandson John Gordon is in fact designated as the 10th Earl of Sutherland, not the 11th as we have on Wikipedia. If we could find what numerical designation the current earl has then that should solve the problem. All it would mean is some article moves which would be pretty easy. Update: the official Clan Sutherland website refers to the 5th Duke as the 23rd Earl, [1] so going by that we appear to have it correct on Wikipedia: Let's just hope they haven't used Wikipedia as their source.QuintusPetillius (talk) 15:31, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

"According to modern historians of the Cambridge University Press, from Robert, 6th Earl onwards they used the surname Sutherland."

This isn't accurate; academics don't publish as part of a university press, and presses do not necessarily endorse the content of the publications they produce. The page should be amended to remove the reference to CUP as it is not relevant to the accuracy of the source. Laurenced (talk) 13:03, 17 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
