It's ROOTLETS which emerge DIRECTLY from spinal cord, not roots. edit

I know it would seem to make sense that there would be roots which directly emerge from the spinal cord, but as far as I know it's really rootlets (a small number of small bundles of axons) which emerge directly from the spinal cord, and then merge together to form the root.
