Talk:Dolores Umbridge (character)/Archive 1

The pages on Remus Lupin, Severus Snape, and Gilderoy Lockhart do not - as promised - have explanations of the roots of their names. Perhaps these could be added?

Retribution

Why was Dolores Umbridge allowed to leave Hogwarts being pelted by Peeves without reprimand for her illegal use of the Dementors she unleashed in August on Harry and Dudley? Her unprofessional methods of student discipline [the black skin lacerating quill] is certainly a sign of a dark witch. By the way, her general incompetence general spell/charm reversal is a sign she is not a fully qualified ministry official.

Lack of evidence. Whether the methods are 'unprofessional' is a matter of opinion; and in any case she went by the book, filling in the forms and so on. About her using the Dementors - well, the only people who heard about that were those in the room, and I'd hardly expect Malfoy to tell that to the Ministry of Magic. Even if Harry did complain, the Ministry - going by our knowledge of its practices - would probably slip it under the table ... -- Gaurav

They changed at the end of the book remember. Fudge admited that Lord Voldemort returned and the Daily Prophet staring saying good things about Harry.

Although the Ministry did change to the "Lord Voldemort exists" POV, they did not become a good or incorrupt organization. In fact, Rufus Scrimgeour's behavior towards Harry suggests that they Ministry's attitude toward the common wizard remains unchanged.12.17.189.77 02:57, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Besides the question of disciplinary action against her, the question of the nature of Umbridge's loyalty is open : her constant avoidance of Defence against the Dark Arts, censorship and desinformation make her an objective ally of the Dark Lord. Up to this point, it might be unwilling, but her use of disturbing methods, such as the black skin lacerating quill, the Dementor attack against Harry Potter, the (intended) use of Veritaserum, and even the intended use of the Crucio spell (unforgivable !) seem to be symptoms of a sever tendancy to Death-eaterism. -- Rama
Yes, I have to say Umbridge seems to have taken a quill out of Barty Crouch's book. The mere fact that Umbridge is helping Voldemort through her actions and Croush wasn't are of little relavence as Umbridge clearly thought Dumbledore was as big a threat as Crouch thought Voldemort was.
Also, notice the favoritism shown towards the Slytherins, Voldemort's old house?
With the bias she showed towards towards the Slytherins, I'll bet you anything she was a Slytherin herself when she was at Hogwarts. The only other possible explanation is that she knew Slytherin were enemies with Gryffindor and did that just to rub in her power. Grrr...I hate that witch. Someone should set a dementor on HER.
I think she definitely was in Slytherin. She was wearing green during the Quidditch match.--Jnelson09 20:00, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Birthdate

Where does Umbridge's birthdate come from. I don't recall her age ever being specified and the MuggleNet birthday archieve doesn't include her.

I don't remember reading anything like it either, although I note that she is styled to have the same birthyear as Voldemort. Wishful thinking, perhaps? The Lexicon has nothing on it either, so I'll remove it if it's ok with everyone. Sinistro 08:48, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Head of Hogwarts

At the bottom of the page it shows who preceded and suceeded her as Defence against the Dark Arts Teacher. But it doesn't mention that she was also Head of Hogwarts (in which case she would be bother preceded and suceeded by Dumbledore). Even though she was only Head for several months she should still be listed as a Head of Hogwarts.

I've noticed that you have added Dolores as a Hogwarts Head so I would like to give a big thankyou to whoever did it! :)

I hate to be the one to tell you, but someone's removed it again. Why would anyone do that? She was Head of Hogwarts for a time, and it should be on her page. Can whoever did it please state their reasoning here, as is polite? Noneofyourbusiness 15:05, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Film portrayer

Any speculations as to who will play her in the movie? If it were up to me, I'd get Prunella Scales, if only because Umbridge's horrible smile puts me in mind of Miss Mapp's horrible smile. --Angr/tɔk mi 22:32, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

I see the role has gone to one Imelda Staunton instead. Oh well. --Angr (t·c) 01:08, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Dissatisfaction with the article

What has happened to this article? It reads like a junior high school book report. Exploding Boy 21:31, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, Exploding Boy, if you don't like it, what do you suggest? --NymphadoraTonks 15:30, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Better picture

Could a better, more general picture of Imelda Staunton be used instead of this movie poster? When I came onto the page, the image was the first thing I saw and my immediate thoughts where the page had for some reason been redirected to some movie page. Squidward2602 13:52, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps a drawing of Umbridge might be better... at least until we can get an actual movie shot. I think a picture of Imelda Staunton out of character is just a picture of Imelda Staunton. But I agree that the movie poster up now is awkward. I'd change it myself, but I'm terrified of copyright. --NymphadoraTonks 20:19, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
If I remember correctly, there was a drawing of Umbridge at the beginning of one of the chapters in Order of the Phoenix; perhaps this would make a good picture? I don't have a digital camera, but if someone else has a way to get a copy of the image, it might be a good idea. It just seems kind of strange not to have a picture of such a major character.
Aye! Got one. We're good. Dragix 09:25, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Evil as death eaters?

This article claims that even though Umbridge is not a follower of Voldemort, she is just as evil as the Death Eaters?!? I would dispute that and its Un-NPoV. Any thoughts? 88.107.25.64

I certainly agree that saying that she is just as evil as the Death Eaters is a statement that has no cannon support. Whether she's more "evil" than Lockhart or not is a matter of opinion, so... Emily 21:12, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Dislike of Half breeds

Is it possible that her dislike of what she calls half breeds, giants, werewolves, centaurs etc stems from the fact she may not be pure human herself although there is no evidence of this I think it could be possible that she has hag blood in her. Hermionie does refer to here as a hag in the OotP book once or twice but as an insult. This is just a theory of mine but like Voldemort seems ashamed of and tries to hide his muggle bloodline Umbridge might have equal feelings about her own ancestry. Penrithguy 13:43, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Interesting theory, but there needs to be more evidence before it can be mentioned on the main page. Very interesting idea though, I wouldn't have thought of it. Noneofyourbusiness 15:02, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

dolores umbridge+imelda staunton picture

Well, Dragix, that is not a movie picture of mrs.umbridge. any REAL movie picture won't come out until the year's end. it's a illustration. Just a illustration.

Headmistress

The Umbridge article should show her as headmistress as well as dark arts teacher at the bottom, preceded by dumbledore succeded by dumbledore. She was the headmistress regardless of whether she was let into the heads office. Her appointment was at no point challenged by the board of governers and sh held teh post for a non trivial time. Just as coup leaders or despots would be reflected in such terms your dislike of the character shouldnt prevent her listing as such.
