No, the term has enough cultural baggage to permit inclusion in an encyclopedia
+1 to the above, this phrase is a matter of cultural exchange, both modern and past. It's not simply a definition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:1C06:8011:4845:D691:9DDD:DDF2 (talk) 16:22, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Billy Bunter books and Hurree Jamset Ram Singh's English edit

I've removed this reference to HJRS and "do the needful." I have The Magnet series (going back to its first issue in 1908), but I can't seem to find Hurree Jamset Ram Singh (of the Billy Bunter "Famous Five") using the expression "do the needful." Not sure who inserted this factoid, but it seems to turn up only on Wikipedia or its mirror sites. I'll keep looking though ... Fowler&fowler«Talk» 22:05, 7 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I completely agree with this comment. I also have the complete collection of Magnets as well as the post-war Billy Bunter books and have never come across the use of this expression by the character Hurree Jamset Ram Singh. Unfortunately the reference was reinstated last December, without any supporting citation, and I have removed it again. If an editor wishes to reverse this change, please provide a specific reference of where the usage occurs.Lord Mauleverer (talk) 07:49, 11 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

This is not notable edit

If you really want to make a real article out of this, you could try combining it with phrases such as "I have a doubt," and "Can you suggest me?" How so? The OED one redirects to what seems to be a subscriber-only page (I don't know our policy on that) but the NYT search results one is okay. 69.111.79.119 (talk) 22:26, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Totally...if there's a problem then someone should open a discussion on the talk-page and not write it in the article itself...so thanks for removing it. --Τασουλα (talk) 23:18, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
