I don't believe that there was "mail" as we know it in Japan in the 12th century, and certainly nothing resembling mass mailings to raise funds. I note that WP:NOR does not allow editors to come up with their own theories. If someone can actually cite a source making a connection between any of the statements below and today's direct mail fundraising, then fine, the statement(s) can go back into the article (with a footnote citing the source). The practice of direct mail fundraising is rooted in experiences many centuries old. Published examples can be found as early as 12th century Japan as well as in the correspondence of abolitionists in 18th and 19th Century Great Britain.
