Although this article does quite well to make clear the theoretical distinction between dialect and diatype, I don't think the example given of AAVE fits very well. Merge to Register (sociolinguistics)

The more commonly used term for a variety of language associated with a particular context of use is register. I can find only five articles that use the term diatype (in the relevant sense - searching is complicated by the existence of the term DIA-type apparatus in physics).
