Talk:Degauss

An external degausser is often used by governments to protect sensitive information from being burned into the display of monitors and televisions.

I could be wrong here, but how does a degausser control phosphor burn in? Dysprosia 14:14, 7 May 2004 (UTC)Reply

Is degaussing indeed a CRT procedure? I thought that it's just the process of nullifying hysteresis in any magnetizable part. --Smack 03:42, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Also, how can magnetization be permanent? Hysteresis may become so strong that the built-in degauss feature cannot remove it, but my limited knowledge of physics tells me that there is no way that it can be truly irremediable. --Smack 04:22, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Note that the article Degaussing covers a much-related topic. I've linked the two, but the other article should really be merged into this one. -- Ilya 03:09, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
