Also, we cannot altogether disambiguate the terms data and information. Partially processed data is frequently referred to (not necessarily incorrectly) as just data.

I have not reviewed the entry for data, but I will. I hope to find or I intend to add something along the lines that data may be viewed much as a collection of words; meaningless until a syntax formats them into a meaningful sentence, which may then be information. Similarly, data is a set of 'potential bits' of information, which remain unintelligible until a suitable format can be found to translate it into information.

Are the letters of the alphabet 'data?' -- there is no known format which will sequence an arbitrary collection of letters into one and only one word!

Information, besides its several other meanings, simply refers to data which is in a format which makes it intelligible to a higher level and, ultimately, some human. (Thus information for one human may, indeed, be nothing but data for another! But, hopefully, we can avoid so extending the meanings of data and information; i.e., we need simply omit those extended definitions. I believe such an extended definition is unnecessary and undesireable, because it would be maximally confusing to those who are not conversant with this degree of definitional nit-picking.)

Compiled Programs

When working with interpretive and script programs, the system's users and programmers tweak the code, run the program. It is easy and normal to make changes.

With compiled programs, we change the source code, run it through a compiler, then run the executable result. There may be some flags or settings we use with the compiler to influence the inclusion of stuff from different software object libraries, or some conditions when the program is executing, but the average installation cannot have people tweaking the execution code then having it work. This is a security feature, since not everyone has access to the source code or the compiler that replaces the execution code available to all users. User:AlMac|^(talk) 09:15, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

We buy computer technology to perform some functions. We typically do not take the CPU mother board apart and re-engineer how it works. If we need new capabilities, we buy plug ins, or add-ons, or upgrade to a more sophisticated piece of hardware. User:AlMac|^(talk) 09:14, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Relation to article "Data processing"

I've been tinkering with the various "Data processing" articles. This seems to contain a lot of the same material as Data processing. I'm not proposing a merge, but my feeling is that Data processing should discuss the functions involved and the types of data processing, while this article should be more about the system aspects.
