Metalworking cutting tools are generally made of tool steels (today most often high speed steel or cobalt steel), carbides, ceramics, or industrial diamonds.

This article has problems. Probably an article called "Cutting tool" should not be just about metal-cutting tools. It would be about all tools that cut, from scissors to cross-cut saws to metal-cutting tools, pointing readers to main articles using {{main}}. If this article wants to be about only metal-cutting tools, which within the context of machining are called simply "cutting tools", then it should probably be titled "Metal-cutting tool" and explicitly state the context restriction in its lede (e.g., "within the context of machining they are called simply 'cutting tools'.") — ¾-10 02:04, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

I think what you did is right, but shouldn't the modifier be "(machining)", because you can machine more than metals, such as plastics. I think this is a common mistake we have made; we have a lot of articles about machining that have a metalworking modifier in the title that are often used to machine other materials. A look at Template:Types of tools makes me realize that "Cutting tool" was supposed to be general all along

So I came to "Cutting tool" when it had already been improperly turned into a metalworking-specific thing, and mistakenly thought that it had originally been intended as such—which it was not. OK, sorry, I will change "Cutting tool" from its current redirect into a general article stub. Will do ASAP. — ¾-10 23:47, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Update: Looked into it—I don't see how you would even make a general "Cutting tool" article that didn't overlap with and fork from the main article "Cutting". Therefore, I solved this by changing Template:Types of tools so that "Cutting tools" pipe-links to "Cutting". — ¾-10 03:38, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Cutting with torches?

Is there an article on materials that goes into depth about the various materials cited in the table? More about cutting tool materials could be added to this article, but would add a lot of detail. tipped tools
