External Links

I'm puzzled by the removal of the links that I added 30/7/2012. These are clearly not spam sites and add relevant material relating to the literary culture of Dorset. As there were no external links, I felt that I was enhancing the article. Of course I understand that things can get out of hand -- perhaps a senior editor could do some deleting of external links on the Thomas Hardy article, where there is a problem. Surely links to reputable literary societies are acceptable, and often of great value? Rwood128 (talk) 13:59, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Art and literature

"Arts and literature" and "Notable Residents" cover similar territory, though it initially looks like "Art and Literature" will be concerned only with individuals, like Thomas Hardy and Barnes, who were not only born in Dorset but wrote about it. The phrase 'notable residents' is too ambiguous!

Perhaps the two sections should be combined, but with the first part dealing with individuals like Hardy, and the second part with incomers who have less of a connection with Dorset. Rwood128 (talk) 17:44, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

The phrase 'notable people' is a standard Wikipedia phrase and a description can be found here. Note how it is usual to mention both those born in the area and those who have resided there. The Powys bros. were initially mentioned as notable residents as their work wasn't discussed in depth. As you have now expanded their piece, I would advise transferring them to the Arts and Literature section and perhaps just briefly mention them in the Notable residents section or leave them out of it altogether. Balance rectified

This article, I thought, was somewhat biased towards what people in the cities imagine Dorset to be like, i.e. it presented a "Hardyesque" vision which I find it hard to recognise as relevant to my life (necessary interest disclosed: I am a resident of Dorset myself). I am aware of the inherent bias within Wikipedia - built into the whole post-Blair "new establishment" of which Wikipedia is a key part - against the style of music Isaiah Dreads is involved in (indeed, similar artists were missing from equivalent articles for Yorkshire and Liverpool until I added them) but I find it hard to imagine that people of the new-establishment status and critically acknowledged (in that whole Guardian/6Music sense) importance of Robert Fripp and P.J. Harvey would have been unmentioned in the "culture of" or "music of" articles for Yorkshire or Liverpool, had they originated in those areas. But their kind of music is - I know this, after all, I only live there - every bit as important for large swathes of Dorset's population as it is for people in Yorkshire and Liverpool; so is Isaiah Dreads' music, even. Therefore I have added five important popular music figures who grew up in Dorset, providing sources for each. RobinCarmody (talk) 01:56, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
