This article seems to be written from a highly technical point of view, and may not be accessible to even reasonably scientifically literate readers. After reading over it a few times, it seems to be saying that water can draw minerals out of rocks; the minerals then concentrate at the surface, making the surface stronger but the core weaker... I think. The rest of it, however, is simply unintelligible. An example of a wholly unreadable sentence follows : "The case hardening on trachytic clasts of volcanic breccia shows peculiar fabrics." Okay... what does it mean for something to be trachytic, what the hell is a clast, and what does it mean when one of these clasts shows a "peculiar fabric?"
I would love to rewrite this page to make it more readable and accessible, but I haven't the foggiest notion of what is being discussed here. The article is well-cited and well-researched, so perhaps one of the contributors who helped put this together can help non-specialists get a handle on the discussion.
