Unfortunately, this articles does not meet the Good Article criteria at this time. I believe this to be the case because of this criterion in particular:

  • "it provides in-line citations from reliable sources for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged"

In my reckoning, three quarters of the article lacks suitable referencing. This is somewhere in the region of 50-100 citations. For example, the whole of the Etymology section is unreferenced. As a rule of thumb, at least one reference per paragraph is necessary, moreso on controversial topics (some are mentioned in the "history" section). For more information, consult the pages on reliable sources, citations, and verifiability to give some indication. Secondly, I feel many of the current references are not up to standard, for example, they contain bare links. I feel also that the lead is insufficient as it makes little mention of many of the sections in the article (for more information, see WP:LEAD). For an article of a similar size, consult the London for an indication of the standards required. If, after improving the article, you believe that it does meet these criteria, you are free to nominate the article again after about a month. However, I suggest consulting an outside opinion or me first to ensure it's worth the effort. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 13:39, 4 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
