Article Update

Hi, My name is Laura and I’m in charge of social media at British Gas. First of all, thank you all for your interest in the company and your contributions and discussions here on Wikipedia. At present, the article is very comprehensive however the information it contains seems heavily focussed on the Gas Boards and British Gas plc.

I would like to suggest it be divided so that these two subjects can occupy their own articles and this article could be the main point of information on British Gas post 1997 demerger. This would be more conducive to present Wikipedia guidelines WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP: DISAMBIGUATION

Of course this article should feature hatnotes so that users searching for information on the pre 1997 brand and its history have quick access to it.

If nobody has time to do these changes I am happy to do so myself whilst keeping to Wikipedia’s policies on neutrality, I simply want to tidy up the article and keep it up to date. Of course any change I make would be subject to review by anybody which is totally right. If anybody else wants to contribute that would be great, I’d welcome the opportunity to work with you all as I have only just started on Wikipedia. Article rewrite

I have modified the article as to remove the copyrighted text from the centrica website which was on the original British Gas page.

I think a comprehnsive article on the British Gas industry from the 19th century up to the present day is really needed including origins, pre 1949 private and municipal undtertakings. Post 1949 nationlisation and conversion to natural gas. 1949-1973 Area boards and Gas Council, 1973 - 1986 British Gas Corporation and regions. 1986 privatisation and 1997 demerger to present day ownership of gas distribution network by National Grid (86.181.195.80 (talk) 19:51, 25 November 2011 (UTC)).

Article Split

Unless there are no objections I plan to redirect this page to Centrica plc which currently uses the British Gas brand and create a new page entitled Brittish Gas Plc dealing with the all the information before the 1997 demerger. --Barry talk 21:21, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Page name

Rather than get into an edit war over the article name I think its better if we have a discussion about it.

To preserve the main article history I've move what was here to British Gas (disambig) and moved what was at British Gas plc here. See Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves. Please don't do a cut and paste move as it potentially looses the history which we need to keep for copyright reasons.

Personally I support the renaming British Gas is the name normally used for the company in the UK. The company website does not use the name "British Gas plc" at all.[1] There may be a need for a hat note to BG Group but I'm not convinced.--Salix (talk): 08:49, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

I think it is confusing, as a number of different companies have used the British Gas brand. The current company (subsidiary of Centrica) is not really the same company as that formed in 1973. I think they need separate articles. It is confusing to have a large maps of "gas area boards", which hasn't been very relevant for the last 20 years.
Also for the current companies, what is the difference between "British Gas Services Limited" and "British Gas Trading Limited" or "GB Gas Holdings Limited" etc? It seems they are all subsidiaries of Centrica using the British Gas brand. --Vclaw (talk) 12:39, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
There may well be a case for an article on the older company, but the current company is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC so the page name is correct.
There are 19 companies who's names start "British Gas"[2], I guess they all do slightly differerent jobs. It looks like "British Gas New Heating limited" does the installation and "British Gas Services Limited" does most of the customer facing roles. "GB Gas Holdings Limited" looks like more of a background thing owning some assets. "British Gas Trading Limited" owns the website.--Salix (talk): 13:22, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
