Talk:Brigham Young University–Hawaii/Archive 1

Name of the article and of the university edit

The title of this article, "Brigham Young University of Hawaii" is not the actual name of the university. On the university's web site, and in official publications, it is know as "Brigham Young University Hawaii" without "of" or any punctuation. When using the abbreviation "BYU" it is written "BYU Hawaii." I'd like to change this unless there is an objection. Please post your comments here. billlund 03:58, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)

Revisit name edit

The official website of the school appears to use "BYU-Hawaii" with a hyphen, but only when it is abbreviated. I agree that the name of the article should not include the hyphen as it appears to not use it when spelled out entirely, but when abbreviated the standard seems to have changed from 2005 when the above comment was written. According to the history section of the official website, the school is referred to as Brigham Young University-Hawaii spelled out fully and the shorter BYU-Hawaii multiple times. In the link you presented, I did not find where it was named spelled out fully or abbreviated without the hyphen. I think this change would be appropriate because it is consist with Brigham Young University–Idaho as well. --DerRichter (talk) 04:42, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
All the references to Brigham Young University Hawaii on the link given (and throughout the website and on written material) show the name without the hyphen when spelled out completely, and only includes the hyphen as BYU-Hawaii. Alanraywiki (talk) 05:07, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Except for where it does show the name with the hyphen when spelled out completely, such as:

April 13, 1974
President Spencer W. Kimball of the LDS Church publicly announces that CCH would become Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus and that Dr. Dan W. Anderson would succeed President Brower as the fifth president of the school.

Just search for it on that exact page. This text was copied exactly. --DerRichter (talk) 03:31, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm seeing examples of both on official and unofficial websites. Very confusing. Wrad (talk) 03:34, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Timeline edit

The timeline needs extensive cleaning and maybe getting rid of the unimportant dates should be considered. VarunRajendran

I have deleted most of it because it was copied from http://www.byuh.edu/about/history.php. See WP:COPYVIO. Snocrates 22:10, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reorder sections edit

I have revised this article in my sandbox at User:Alanraywiki/sandbox. Basically I reordered the sections to be like that of the Provo campus. Please review it before I move it over here. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 14:22, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Moved the new order to the article space. Alanraywiki (talk) 00:04, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Userbox update edit

Just wanted to let everyone know that I updated the BYUH userbox to reflect both crimson and gold. You can insert the userbox into your userpage by typing {{User BYU-Hawaii}}. Enjoy! --Eustress (talk) 23:21, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pictures edit

Is there anyone at BYUH that could get some pictures to put on this page? Thanks. --Eustress (talk) 06:22, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Added imageneeded=yes to the header. Viriditas (talk) 09:28, 29 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

City and County of Honolulu edit

I realize technically that Laie is in the political area known as City and County of Honolulu (as is all of Oahu), but I think including that title may mislead readers to think that Laie is just a suburb of Honolulu. It is on the other side of the island, so really has nothing to do with the city of Honolulu. I think we should leave City & County of Honolulu off this article so as not to be confusing. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 14:09, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I think what we have now establishes Laie as a "community" within the C+O of Honolulu that is distinct from the "community" of Honolulu. If Laie has nothing to do with the "community" of Honolulu we could omit the "(thirty-five miles from the community of Honolulu)" bit. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:54, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think keeping the distance from Honolulu with the statement about being on the windward coast may help readers understand more the location of Laie. I'm for keeping it the way it is right now. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 19:15, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
