Shorthand? edit

I don't get the sentence "In shorthand, it is usually written as 6/555-1234." What is the "it" referring to -- the 678 area code or any of the three area codes that cell phone subscribers can choose from? Also, who writes this in shorthand -- only people in Georgia or Atlanta?

I have to say, I've never heard of writing just the first digit of an area code, whether in an overlay area or not. So it would be nice to have a source on this (maybe some webpages from Ga or Atl?).

I'll reword it, but yes, it's very common for people in the metro Atlanta area to write just the first number of the code (like 7/###-#### for numbers in the 770 are code) for informal correspondence. When it changed to 10 digit dialing people started having to remember area codes all the time. When 770 came out people started writing 7/ as short hand for the area code, so when 678 was introduced it was treated the same way with a 6/. Atlanta had 10 digit dialing before the rest of the country so it's probably not common in most other areas. 146.145.251.34 (talk) 19:04, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Idea edit

I propose that this article be merged with Steve Guttenberg or Eli Whitney. Makes sense to me. Think about it.216.129.31.125 (talk) 20:53, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
