Caution on using source as a reference

An apparent lift of the article to a web site ( http://www.american-architecture.info/USA/CHICAGO/CHIC.htm#History )was done with the Nov 2007 version of the History section of this article. Unfortunately, the web site does not indicate its source, which seems to be Wiki. Please take care if you plan to use the web site as a source - you may be actually be indirectly citing a reference to a Wiki article. By the way, it looks like a great site completely focused on architecture. I would have placed in the "External link" section, but we would just be linking to our articles version from Nov 2007. Merge with Chicago school (architecture)

From what I can gather, the two articles are about the same thing, and should be merged to avoid overlap and redundancy. - Log'a'log 02:26, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree. Chupper 19:27, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
The articles are about two different topics. No need to merge.Thomas Paine1776 (talk) 21:30, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Oppose - To me the Chicago School is just one style used within the general architecture of Chicago. So, I oppose the merge. Nevertheless, I hope someone will develop the "Architecture of Chicago article and list the various schools or styles that can be witnessed in the architecture of Chicago. Seems to me the general article on Architecture of Chicago would make a very good "table of contents" for various articles related to Chicago architecture. FYI - I started the heading "Styles and Schools" within the article. Pknkly (talk) 19:27, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

References

I've added two tags to the article; the first is the tag on top stating the article doesn't use inline citations (we really only have 1 referenced source listed at the end), and the second tag was placed on the notable buildings section. Even though those individual articles may be referenced well, we still need to reference them here. I've added references for the Chicago Spire. Additional referencing here, and definitely throughout the rest of the article would be appreciated.

Here are the external links I pulled out per WP:EL. I'm listing them here in case they were used as references. This way we can refer back to this list and add in in-text citations to the article.

  1. Walking architectural tours of Chicago http://www.architecture.org
  2. Information on several major Chicago buildings http://www.aviewoncities.com/chicago.htm
  3. Cosmopolis overview http://dg.ian.com/index.jspcid=42611&action=viewLocation&locationId=41932 [dead link]
  4. Chicago Church Architecture http://www.schlacks.org
  5. American Institute of Architects http://www.aia150.org/

Thanks for your help! Chupper 16:50, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I removed the articles references needed tag because we may have adequate citations for the current article and for further development by editors. The above information looks real good. Hope we can get to them and use them. Pknkly (talk) 16:55, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Great links! Lifted them, except for the broken link, into the "External links" section. Chupper, Hope you don't mind.

How much depth for the "Notable future Chicago buildings" section?

I noticed that we have differing levels of detail on these buildings. For example the Aqua Tower bullet lists information on the developer & designer, even though those organizations don't have articles. The Chicago Spire bullet does not list the developer and designer even though they already have articles...? I'm thinking we should stay consistent with the detail we go into, but what are your thoughts on how far we should go? Chupper 16:54, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I've removed this section. There are a lot of future Chicago buildings, but which ones are "notable"? Who is to say what is notable and what is not? A future Chicago skyscrapers template already exists (Click here). Why don't we focus on putting new information in those specific articles and focus on expanding that template? Styles and Schools Section

I added this and grabbed the styles and schools mentioned within the article at the time of this edit. I hope some editor with an architectural bent will expand on the list. Seems to me that every structure, including all the brownstones and bungalows outside the Loop and in the greater Chicagoland, would fall into some kind of style or school.e If that is true, than we need more styles and schools in the section. Thanks goes out to those who expand this section. I'll look forward to seeing what the "experts" add. Pknkly (talk) 20:00, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I sumbled across a good online source and used it. I updated this section and then linked them to Wiki articles. Don't realy like the look of the two lengthy lists, but I suppose it makes sense to have them. Thoughts? Pknkly (talk) 16:59, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Off topic http://www.forgottenchicago.com/ Forgotten Chicago

I removed "* http://www.forgottenchicago.com/ Forgotten Chicago" because to me it looked like it was off the topic of the article. There may be something within the site I'm missing. A brief browsing session didn't reveal any on-topic stuff. Pknkly (talk) 17:48, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Blog * http://www.edwardlifson.com/ Contemporary Chicago architecture

I removed "* http://www.edwardlifson.com/ Contemporary Chicago architecture" because a link to blogs are to be avoided (see: Wikipedia:External links#Links normally to be avoided item 11. Pknkly (talk) 18:06, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Demolition dates

I added dates of demolition for the notable buildings listed on the page. After taking the architecture tour this past week, I was surprised by how little discussion was given over to what had been torn down over the years; in fact part of what is so extraordinary about Chicago is how few notable buildings have been taken down to make way for others. --Brad Patrick (talk) 15:57, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
