this story is very confusing. Perhaps before the story, it could be explained who the three girls are?

Sometimes in Greek fairy tales, a special character is referred by a name that contains more than one words. These words may rhyme with each other. The name here is "Ανθούσα, Ξανθούσα, Χρυσομαλλούσα". The first word indicates a girl in puberty, and the other two indicate that she has blond hair. The word "Ξανθούσα" is not an official Greek word. It may come from "Ξανθούλα" which means "little blond girl" or "cute blond girl". The word may have been changed from "Ξανθούλα" to "Ξανθούσα" to rhyme with the other two. Also, the first word might not be an adjective like the other two. Maybe the girl's name was "Ανθή" (means "flower woman" or "blooming woman") and "Ανθούσα" would be a cuter form of the name, just like the Greek name "Χρυσή" (means "gold woman" or "valuable woman") which becomes "Χρυσούλα" etc.
