Definition

"umbrella term for Assyriology, in some cases extending to Egyptology."

Does this definition suffice for covering the areas outside the Tigris-to-Euphrates and Nile Delta regions, i.e. Aram-Damascus, Canaan (Phoenicia, Land of Israel with Transjordan)? Not to mention Cyprus, Persia, Armenia, E Anatolia, Arabia... Please also mind that, given the more extended definitions of the Near East in terms of periods covered, the dominance of the two centres is greatly diminished during the later periods. History of ANE studies

The (current) first citation in the History section, stating that Pinches was appointed to a professorship at the University of London, may be incorrect. I do not have long-term access to the cited work (The Study of the Ancient Near East in the 21st Century) but I have not been able to find any reference in it to T. G. Pinches. If anyone has access to an electronic copy, a full text search should be able to quickly find if Pinches is discussed in the book or not. MR. Pockets (talk) 20:47, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
