Which L.72?

The little, heavily staggered pusher flying boat described in the January 1926 Flight ref is clearly not the same machine as the subject of this article. Flight describes them both as L. 72 (well, strictly the transport is labelled L.72A) but I think they perhaps have mis-identified the flying boat, reg D-119, which other sources like HistAviation ("Albatros L.66".) and various registers (e.g. This) designate the L.71. Coming back later there is clearly a naming division between the prewar and the modern sources. Prewar we have bothe French and Engish journals agreeing that the little flying boat was the L72 (Les ailes 72 and Flight 72. Both also agree that the transport was the 72A (or 72a) (Les ailes 72a and Flight 72A). Of the moderns, L71 is representative in calling the flying boat L71, even though their source calls it L.72 (see the 3-view, for example). Given the consistency in the prewar journals (two languages, two types) I'm now inclined to think the modern sources have been trying to avoid a naming conflict which Albatros sorted with the added A. The two aircraft ere close to each other in time and to the L73, which may have contributed to the? Mystery! Anyway, unless anyone objects, I'll move the 72 -> 72A. For some reason I've called the L.71 or 72 a flying boat. It was a little sports plane with a conventional u/c!

Hmph! Just found this. The 71 and 72 sound like the same aircraft and most likely the German source trumps the "foreign" English and French journals.TSRL (talk) 17:07, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
