You probably won't get a full review until tomorrow, but two things struck me right off the bat; both regarding the referencing. Ref 2. needs full bibliographic details (and maybe an explanation for your reviewer why it's a RS), and you shouldn't use "pp." when citing a single page. Courcelles (talk) 22:35, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- I eliminated ref 2 since the same materiel is covered on page 115 of allen. I also elimitated the second p from the formating in the refs.XavierGreen (talk) 00:37, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- "Experiment managed to defend the other" first, italicise the ship name, second, this shouldn't be the first mention of Experiment, the name should appear in the sentence "t between an American convoy consisting of a United States naval schooner and four merchant vessels"
- "the rest of the island nation." First, is it appropriate to refer to a country that shares an island as an island nation? Second, my Haitian history is a little rough, but wasn't Haitian independence in 1804- so there wasn't a "nation" at this point in time?
- Why use Gonave but link to Gonâve? Shouldn't the mark be visible?
- Dab link to Beaching
- "before beaching at the nearby island of Gonaive to land their wounded and gathered reinforcements." Tense change in the middle of a sentence.
- "For three hours the Experiment battled" italics again
- "were abandoned by there crews" their
- "to make it to Leogane, where " It's Léogâne
- "by the American consol." Consul.
- "and the second in command David Porter," second in command of what? I assume Experiment, but it should be spelled out.
- "the Experiment would have been lost." Italics again.
- Both senior officers on Experiment were Lieutenants? Was one an LTJG, or were they the same rank? (I know, I know, neither LTJG or LCDR were actual ranks yet.)
- That's all I have for you. Courcelles (talk) 00:58, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking it o'er. I believe i have fixed all the issues except for the last one. The rank system of the united states navy in the late 1700's and early 1800's was very different than it was today. Lietenants and even sometimes midshipment would command lesser vessels such as gunboats and schooners. Rather than having different ranks of lieutenant, there were different functions that a Lieutenant could fufill. MacLay was officially ranked a Lieutenant, but was senior to Porter as he fufilled the position of Lieutenant commander of the Experiment, while Porter was the Experiments First Lieutenant. I believe MacLay was senior in commision to Porter, but they did hold the same rank. It's actually quite a common occurence for the time period.XavierGreen (talk) 02:13, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- See, military history isn't my field :) I guarantee this article would benefit from an A-Class review to get some content experts on it before you consider an FAC, but that is beyond the scope of a GAN. Passed. Courcelles (talk) 02:24, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
